❌ How to NOT throw discus If you’re doing any of these, you’re literally killing your distance 👇 1️⃣ Leading with the left arm first If the left arm opens before the right leg turns, you transfer weight too early to the block side. That makes it impossible to rotate the pivot foot before the upper body opens, which kills separation, kills stretch reflex, and kills the whip on the discus. You want to lead with the right leg first, then open the block arm to create stretch through the chest. 2️⃣ Pulling the head too fast If you look for the field early, you transfer early again and destroy the timing of the throw. You end up blocking while the discus is still far back, which breaks the sequence. You should be seeing the field as the discus is leaving your hand, not before. 3️⃣ Uneven shoulders and pulling to the side These mistakes usually create a broken finish. One shoulder drops, you pull sideways, and your orbit gets shorter. Now you release with less leverage, less power, and broken hips. That also ruins the flight because your forces aren’t aligned with the discus. You’re pulling left, the discus wants to go another direction, and you lose your wingspan advantage completely. If you want to PR big this outdoor season in the discus, these are the three drills we recommend utilizing!!! 🔑 Opening Drill - this is a great drill to develop getting the body weight shifted over, with the hand reaching out to get the armpit over the knee and the hip over to get the knee over the toe! 🔑 Giant Step (270) Drill - this is the next step in the progression. Same focus as the opening drill with the addition of the sweep leg getting around and down into the middle. Keep shoulders forward (towards the sector) as right leads and grounds into the middle 🔑 Full Drill - this drill is perfect for developing overall rhythm with full movement. Take the focuses from first two drills and put them together, as you ground at the front. Pause to develop the skill of keeping the shoulders back, while the hips get ahead.
