First VO₂ max test since getting back into rowing just over three months ago! 😮‍💨 For anyone curious what this looks like in rowing: we start first with a blood lactate step test (3 minutes on, 1 minute off, increasing power by 20 watts each round). During the rest, they prick my ear for a small blood sample to measure blood lactate, and we keep going until it hits around 6.0 mmol/L (for context, steady-state/aerobic work usually sits around 2.0 mmol/L). After a ten-minute break, the actual VO₂ max test starts at 20 watts below where the step test ended and climbs by 20 watts every minute (no rest) until failure. Fun times!! Not enough people realize how MASSIVE of a mistake this is… On the @concept2inc (and pretty much every rowing machine, water rower etc)- you’ve gotta understand that the chain CONNECTS during the stroke sequence at a SLIGHT DIAGONAL angle! It is not “straight in and out of the machine”. Seriously… go film yourself rowing and you will see EVERY TIME the chain snaps up slightly. Every inch of the drive you take before the “snap up” is WASTED because you have little to no connection when the chain isn’t slightly diagonally pulled. While this example in the video might be exaggerated, carrying your hands low is taking most of the efficiency out of your rowing stroke. ❌ The answer is NOT to “scoop” the handle to lift the hands! This is unsustainable at high stroke rates. ✅ Instead, try this drill. Pause at the knees with the handle low to your thighs, then slowly “trickle” aka lift your hands up up up… it’s a SUBTLE movement. Then, drive back with your hands lifted high and notice INSTANTLY how much stronger and connected your stroke feels. Massive difference.
