The secret to crispy tofu isn’t oil or deep-frying, it’s this 5-step texture technique 🔥 By @wendythefoodscientist Most people think you need a ton of oil or deep frying to get crispy tofu. But as a food scientist, I’m going to show you how texture manipulation creates the crispiest tofu with minimal oil. Here’s the 5-step technique: 1. TEAR into chunks (don’t cut!) Creates irregular edges = more surface area = more crunch + better sauce hold. Those rough edges crisp up beautifully. 2. BOIL in salted water for 5 minutes This step changes everything. Boiling firms up the proteins, expels excess moisture, and seasons the tofu from the inside. It’s the foundation of perfect texture. 3. COAT in potato starch After draining, toss in potato starch (or cornstarch). This creates a light, crackly shell that stays crispy. The starch absorbs any remaining surface moisture and forms that signature golden crust. 4. ADD a little bit of oil Just a light coating is enough. The oil helps conduct heat and promotes browning. You need way less than you think. 5. BAKE until perfect The oven or air-fryer does all the work while you prep the rest of your meal. POPCORN TOFU 😍🍿 Crispy, crispier, this tofu! 😋 I think this is one of of my new favourite tofu recipes, it’s really fuss-free and tastes soo good! 🥰 Btw you can also bake or air fry the nuggets instead of frying them. Much love Maya ✨ RECIPE (4 servings each 365cal/16P/43C/12F): -400g tofu, pat dried TEAR into chunks -1/2 Cup (125ml) plant milk -1 Tbsp each apple cider vinegar and sriracha MIX/ADD tofu/MARINATE for 30mins -3/4 (90g) cup starch -2 Tsp each paprika, salt, garlic powder -pepperrrr to taste TOSS the chunks in the mix -1 cup Panko seasoned COAT the tofu in the Panko/FRY until golden brown (or bake at 200C/400F for 20mins) Seasoning: -1 Tsp each paprika, cumin, salt Tofu damit vermischen - POPCORN TOFU😍🍿 Knusprig, knuspriger, dieser Tofu! 😋 Ich glaube das ist eines meiner neuen Lieblings-Tofu-Rezepte, es ist mega einfach zu machen und schmeckt sooo gut! 🥰 Übrigens kannst du sie auch backen oder in der Heißluftfriteuse machen anstatt sie zu braten. The simple boiling hack that changed everything Exactly six months ago, I shared a simple tofu hack… and you all went wild! By @wendythefoodscientist. Just one video made 100k tofulovers gather here! Millions of you watched it, tried it, and told me it finally made tofu make sense. Some of you even said it finally made you love tofu! So if you still haven’t tried it, this is why you should: Boiling tofu in salted water for 5 minutes: 1. Water goes out Boiling draws out excess moisture, especially from the surface. If you use salted water, a bit of osmosis kicks in: water moves from the tofu (low salt) to the boiling water (high salt). Salt goes in by diffusion A small amount of salt moves into the tofu, gently seasoning it from within — without making it too salty. 2. The protein network opens up Heat slightly loosens the soy protein structure, kind of like relaxing the tofu’s “pores.” This preps the tofu to soak up marinades and sauces better afterward. I’m talking about marinating for seconds instead of hours. Texture improves! The tofu becomes firmer, cleaner, and less likely to fall apart, which is ideal for stir-frying or braising. today year old me just learned you can make crispy tofu in the air fryer 😳 For recipe, make sure you’re following me then comment “gimme recipe” so that the message goes thru. I used to buy fried tofu or fry it myself but until I discovered you can air fry it, and honestly my life has changed lol. It gets perfectly golden, crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and way more fragrant than regular tofu. You can snack on it as is, toss it into noodles, soups, or throw it into any quick stir-fry. Lately I’ve been doing a simple sweet and spicy glaze with @chefschoicefoods vegan fish sauce and sriracha, and it’s perfect with a bowl of rice.
