LIFibro Easter Eggers are often confused with Ayam Cemani, but this is a relatively new breed that is a genetic cross between two other breeds. It is thought that they may have some genetic link to the Ayam Cemani but I cannot tell you that for certain. Here are some facts about this mysterious breed!
🖤Fibro meaning “fibromelanosis” is just the word used to describe their black hyperpigmentation. Melanistic is a genetic mutation that causes the chicken to have increased levels of melanin. The degree of black feathering with Fibro Easter Eggers will vary as will secondary colors but the skin, legs, and lobes will all be black. Their feathers can be all black or may have an iridescent black appearance.
🖤Just like standard easter eggers they can have a variety of pea combs but their comb and wattles are solid black. They can also have small crests.
🖤Hybrids do not breed true, meaning that the offspring of hybrids may not have the same traits as their parents. I say this because the fibro melanistic gene is believed to be the dominant gene, so if a hyperpigmented male is bred with a normally pigmented female, some but not all of the resulting birds will display the dark hyperpigmentation that the father has because the gene may or may not be fully expressed.
🖤They lay primarily turquoise blue eggs but will occasionally lay green or olive eggs with faint white speckling which is amazing. In my experience, they are reliable layers and will lay 4-5 eggs per week.
🖤They are small birds and adult birds usually weigh in around 4-5 pounds. They are very friendly and do well in pretty much all climates and are rarely broody. If you have small children these would be great to integrate into your flock as they have a very calm and easy going nature.
