To build and your grow your hamstrings you need to ensure you are training them through their functions of knee flexion and hip extension. Knee flexion exercises include exercises like lying leg curl and seated leg curl. The difference with these two is that the seated leg curl is harder in the lengthened position (at the top where legs are extended) and the lying leg curl is hardest toward the shortened position (when legs are curled). Hip extension exercises include Romanian deadlifts, good mornings, stiff leg deadlifts. These will train your hamstrings in the lengthened position. The exercises are hardest in the bottom position. One of the biggest nerves in the body, the sciatic nerve, runs behind our leg underneath our hamstrings! Our nerves should move and glide just like our muscles do! If they aren’t moving properly they can cause restriction, tightness & pain! Which can in turn limit our movement patterns, such as bending down to touch our toes, etc! Instead of stretching your hamstrings, target your nerve mobility first! The biggest difference when mobilizing your nerve versus your muscle is you should never hold your nerve on a prolonged static stretch.
