🇬🇧/🇩🇪 The giant moray (Gymnothorax javanicus) is the largest moray eel in the Red Sea and a true master of disguise.
Often hidden in crevices with just its head exposed, it opens and closes its mouth continuously - not as a threat, but to breathe!
Despite its intimidating look and sharp teeth, this nocturnal predator is generally shy and only comes out at night to hunt.
During the day, it shares its home with cleaner shrimp and wrasses in a peaceful symbiosis.

Die Riesenmuräne (Gymnothorax javanicus) ist die größte Muränenart im Roten Meer und ein echtes Tarnungstalent.
Tagsüber sieht man meist nur ihren Kopf aus einer Felsspalte ragen, während sie ständig ihr Maul öffnet - nicht aus Aggression, sondern zum Atmen!
Trotz ihres furchteinflößenden Aussehens ist sie scheu und geht nachts auf Jagd.
Am Tag lebt sie oft in friedlicher Gemeinschaft mit Putzerfischen und -garnelen, die sie von Parasiten befreien.

1. **Size & Habitat**: The giant moray can grow up to 3 meters (10 feet) long, making it one of the largest species of moray eels. It thrives in tropical waters, often found in coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific region.
2. **Camouflage Masters**: With mottled brown and yellow coloring, they blend seamlessly into coral and rock crevices, where they typically hide during the day and hunt at night.
3. **Diet & Hunting**: They primarily feed on fish and crustaceans. Interestingly, they sometimes hunt in cooperation with reef fish, like groupers, showing rare interspecies teamwork.
4. **Sharp Teeth & Strong Bite**: Their sharp, needle-like teeth are perfect for gripping prey, and their second set of jaws, known as **pharyngeal jaws**, helps pull prey down their throat, making their bite incredibly effective.
