DRWake up, 80 million Maithils. This is not just a call — this is a reminder of who we are.
We are the descendants of a civilization that gave the world wisdom, philosophy, art, and devotion. Mithila is not just a land on a map; it is an identity written in our blood, in our traditions, and most importantly, in our language — Maithili. This is the language of our ancestors, the language in which our mothers first spoke to us, the language that carries our emotions in their purest form.
And yet today, slowly and silently, we are distancing ourselves from it. Not because someone else is taking it away, but because we ourselves are abandoning it. We hesitate to speak Maithili in public. We avoid teaching it to our children. We replace it with other languages to appear modern, forgetting that true modernity never demands the death of your roots.
A language does not die in a day. It dies when its own people stop speaking it. It dies when its own people stop feeling proud of it.
If 80 million Maithils decide today to speak Maithili without hesitation, to write it, to promote it, and to pass it on to the next generation, no power in the world can weaken it. But if we remain silent, even the strongest heritage can fade with time.
This is not about rejecting other languages. This is about protecting our own. This is about respect. This is about identity. This is about existence.
Mithila gave us a name. Maithili gave us a voice. Now it is our responsibility to ensure that this voice never fades.

Both Maithili’s script (called Tirhuta or Mithilakshar) and the Bengali–Assamese script come from the same ancient family of Brahmic writing systems, which is why some letters may look similar at first glance.
However, Maithili’s Tirhuta has its own unique characters and shapes that set it apart, and even though some letters resemble those in Bengali, their forms, usage, and orthographic rules are distinct
Today, many people write Maithili in Devanagari, but Tirhuta is still actively used by many, from poets to priests, It remains an integral part of our heritage and reflects the richness and diversity of our Maithili language traditions 📝❤️

DRMithilakshar — also known as Tirhuta — is not just a script; it is the written soul of the Mithila civilization. For centuries, this alphasyllabic script was the indigenous writing system of the Maithili language, spoken by millions across the Mithila region of India and Nepal. 
Belonging to the ancient Brahmic family of scripts and closely related to Bengali, Assamese, and Odia writing systems, Mithilakshar evolved into its present form by around the 10th century, with inscriptions dating back to at least the 10th–13th centuries found in temples and historical sites across Mithila. 
For generations, it was used to compose literature, record genealogies (pañjī), and write ceremonial documents and invitations — reflecting its deep integration with cultural and social life. 
Despite this rich legacy, the script gradually declined during the 20th century as Devanagari became the dominant writing system for Maithili, pushing Mithilakshar into limited ceremonial and scholarly use. 
Today, most Maithili writing is done in Devanagari even though Mithilakshar remains its traditional native script and an important marker of regional identity. 
Encouragingly, revival efforts are underway. The script was encoded into Unicode in the 2010s, enabling digital fonts, typing tools, and educational resources that reconnect younger generations with their heritage. 
Cultural initiatives are now promoting its use in creative work, digital media, textiles, and education — proving that tradition and technology can grow together. 
Mithilakshar is more than letters on a page — it is identity, memory, and continuity. Preserving and promoting it is not about nostalgia; it is about safeguarding a living heritage that links language, culture, and history across centuries.
