On the other hand, leaning the torso forward slightly, keeping the shin more vertical to the ground, and hinging back at the hips will shift more of the load to the glutes. Well it is, but it's not a good one 🫣 There are some things I should clarify... i've posted tips on optimizing glute engagement in the Bulgarian split squat before, however there's some details that I need to explain. 1. This movement is actually great for both the quad and glute growth. However, this video is aimed at shifting more of the work towards your glutes. If your goal is to load the quads more, then you're going to want to execute the movement a little bit differently. At the end of the day: flying through a movement carelessly, not controlling the movement and bouncing from the bottom is not going to be optimal from muscle growth no matter what muscle you're trying to hit. (Ex the first clip shown) So let's break down the steps down so you can move confidently: Barefoot (this works for me, but if you have a flat shoe, then you don't need to be barefoot). However, a lot of people in the gym I see lifting in shoes that have way too much cushion on the bottom, and are very difficult for stability, especially when doing single leg movements. I'd recommend flat shoes, barefoot shoes, or if you're comfortable working out in your socks go for it) Stance: the closer, the stance, typically the more quad bias. The longer the stance, the more glute bias. There are some nuances, but this is a good place to start when thinking about what your goal is for the movement. Lean vs. upright: I've actually seen this debated quite a bit. So pay attention to what feels best. I find a slight lean, helps me keep a vertical shin and allows for more bias of the glutes. I also find that a more upright position helps me drive my knee forward more and really work my quads in a deeper stretch. At the end of the day if this is a difficult movement, you're trying to master for glutes: - have stable footing - control the movement - aim for a vertical shin Keep working to make it better everytime 💪
