Do you recognize this sound? 🔈 Considered by many as the announcement of spring, this distinct, loud, high-pitched “peep” is the call of a spring peeper. More often heard than seen, these very small, pale-brown frogs can be recognized by the X-shaped mark on their backs. Video: Erin Raffaldi Russell

It's the spring equinox, which marks the astronomical first day of spring as the sun crosses directly over Earth's equator. We feel there is no better opportunity to return to our Sounds of Spring series! Today's featured creature is the aptly named Spring Peeper! These little amphibians are one of Vermont's smallest frogs, measuring in at only 1 to 1 1/2 inches long, though their distinctive call that can be heard from hundreds of yards away makes up for their diminutive size. Peepers peep by filling their vocal sacs with air until they look like a balloon, then letting out a "peep" as they release the air. This sound can either be a short ascending whistle or can be broken into a series of ascending peeps. Peepers spend the winter hibernating under logs or behind loose bark on trees, waiting for the spring thaw to start singing. Typically, these calls will begin in mid-March and peak in early May, though they can continue to be heard through July and occasionally sing again in the fall. As you listen to this post, you'll hear not only Spring Peepers, but also the deeper, duck-like sound of a Wood Frog. Another sound that signals the start of spring! Have you heard any Spring Peepers or Wood Frogs yet this year? 📷 Spring Peeper, photo by VFWD

🐸 Smol frog, big sound. Have you heard the nightly chorus come alive, signalling the first signs of spring? Spring peepers are one of the first frogs heard in the transition from winter to spring. Want to practice your frog call ID skills? National wildlife refuges are known for wetlands and are a good place to listen for frogs any time of day, especially at dusk. Just be sure to check local regulations for open and closed hours. Spring peeper calling by Megan Seymore/USFWS

🐸Happy World Frog Day!🐸 One of the first and surest signs of spring is the sounds of small frogs singing in vernal pools and ponds across the Midwest. Two of the most common early spring singers are wood frogs (Lithobates sylvaticus) and spring peepers (Pseudacris crucifer). Both species of frogs gather in large numbers at small, still bodies of water, where the males sing loudly to attract females. Wood frogs sound like a bunch of clucking chickens or quacking ducks, while spring peepers' song is, well, a high-pitched peeping sound. That's how they got their name! Wood frogs are bigger than spring peepers—they're around 1.5-3 inches long, while spring peepers top out at 1.5 inches. Despite the size difference, spring peepers can drown out the calls of wood frogs if they're gathered in the same pond. In fact, spring peeper calls can reach up to 90 decibels (about the same loudness as a lawnmower). In large groups, singing spring peepers can be heard up to two miles away!

The song of the Spring Peeper can be heard echoing across the wetlands and forest as spring approaches. The Spring Peeper is a small tree frog known for its iconic 90 decimal chirp. This song is performed by the males in order attract mates. Many other amphibians like Wood Frog and Spotted Salamanders are making the journey back to their breeding ponds with the warm rains. Hopefully I’ll be able to get some more footage of this amazing annual event.
