FAResident Evil – Code: Veronica – The True Next Chapter After Resident Evil 2
Released in 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast, Resident Evil – Code: Veronica was a major step forward for the survival horror series. Unlike earlier entries that used pre-rendered backgrounds, this game featured fully 3D environments and more cinematic storytelling.
For many fans, it felt like the true continuation of the story from Resident Evil 2.
The Story
The game follows Claire Redfield as she continues her search for her brother, Chris Redfield. After being captured by Umbrella, Claire is imprisoned on Rockfort Island — a remote facility overrun by the T-virus.
Soon the outbreak spreads across the island, unleashing zombies, mutated creatures, and a new generation of Umbrella experiments.
Claire eventually reunites with Chris, and together they face one of the franchise’s most disturbing villains:
Alfred Ashford and his twin sister Alexia Ashford.
Gameplay Evolution
Code: Veronica kept the classic survival horror formula but expanded it with:
Fully 3D character models and environments
Larger locations and more exploration
More cinematic storytelling and voice acting
Classic puzzle-solving and resource management
The game still used the series’ traditional fixed camera angles, maintaining the tension and claustrophobic feel of earlier entries.
Code: Veronica X
An enhanced version, Resident Evil Code: Veronica X, was later released on PlayStation 2 with new story scenes and improved visuals. This version became the most widely known edition of the game.
Why It’s Important
Code: Veronica expanded the Resident Evil storyline in major ways, diving deeper into Umbrella’s history and the twisted Ashford family legacy. Many longtime fans consider it one of the strongest entries in the classic survival horror era.
