BEFound this 30 foot tapeworm in a creek in B.C. Tapeworms are part of the normal ecosystem infecting bears as they feed on salmon, growing to sometimes great lengths in their intestines, and then coming out and depositing eggs in the river as the food supply dwindles in the fall and the bears get ready to hibernate. JAThese two are just single-celled organisms; basically a bunch of building blocks and cell machinery wrapped in a membrane, and here you can see what happens when that membrane bursts and spills its contents out.

The smaller organism, Holophrya, has harpoon-like structures around its cell mouth that are expelled to immobilize prey. They usually go after smaller microorganisms or decomposing organic matter, so this whole scene was so unexpected my jaw was on the floor.

When I found these two, Holophrya’s little harpoons had already fired and pierced the cell membrane of the larger organism, a Stentor, and it was tugging on the Stentor’s membrane. After a few seconds, the membrane popped almost like a balloon, and the Stentor’s cell contents spilled into the environment for Holophrya to feed on.

Holophrya has sensory mechanisms that let it detect the chemical signals coming from the spilled contents of the Stentor. So it kept swimming around for minutes, swallowing all the soup-like cytoplasm droplets and solid chunks of organelles, and even the bits of lunch Stentor had earlier.

While Holophrya was feeding on its spilled “guts,” the Stentor was busy repairing the hole in its membrane. Although it lost a lot of cell mass, Stentor has the ability to recover from all this and regenerate its deformed cell back to normal like nothing has happened. I wish I had that skill of regenerating emotionally, I’m like a savant of sad memories and broken cell membranes. 😂

HETapeworms are flat, ribbon-like parasites that live in the human intestines.
Some species, like Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm), can grow up to 60 feet (18 meters) long.
Despite their massive size, they have no mouth or digestive system.
Tapeworms survive by absorbing nutrients directly through their skin (tegument) from the host's digested food.
They attach to the intestinal wall using hooked suckers on their head, known as the scolex.
Infected individuals may not show symptoms for a long time, making detection tricky.
When symptoms occur, they can include abdominal pain, weakness, nausea, and weight loss.
Segments of the tapeworm (proglottids) may be visible in stool, often mistaken for noodles or rice grains.
Tapeworms can live for years inside the human gut if untreated.
Properly cooking meat, maintaining hygiene, and deworming when necessary can prevent infection.

1. Disease Transmission
Cockroaches are mechanical vectors — meaning they carry pathogens on their body surfaces, legs, and inside their gut from dirty places like sewers, garbage, and drains.
They can transmit:
Salmonella, E-coli, shigella,staphylococcus,Parasite eggs (like roundworm or hookworm eggs they pick up from contaminated soil)
2. Allergens and Asthma Triggers
Cockroach saliva, feces, shed exoskeletons, and body parts can trigger severe allergic reactions in sensitive people.
Symptoms include:
Sneezing
Skin rashes
Asthma attacks
Especially dangerous for children and the elderly in cockroach-infested homes.
3. Food Contamination
They crawl over food, utensils, and surfaces — leaving behind pathogens, allergens, and sometimes parasite eggs, risking foodborne illnesses.
4. Psychological Stress
Their presence can cause anxiety, fear (katsaridaphobia — fear of cockroaches), and stress, especially in densely populated urban households.
5. Parasitic Host
Cockroaches themselves often harbor intestinal parasites like Leidynema (as you just observed), protozoa like Nyctotherus, and helminth eggs in their gut — which can indirectly contribute to spreading parasitic infections when humans accidentally ingest contaminated food or water.
