Each spring the foxes begin to shed their huge winter coats. Most of them shed just fine without assistance, but Fig always needs a little help during this process. All of the foxes at our sanctuary are ranched foxes or were bred on a “fur farm” which means they were bred to have unnaturally dense coats, far more dense than a wild fox. This was intentionally bred into their generics so that they would have an extremely plush pelt once they were eventually “harvested”. 💔 This dense coat is far harder to shed than the natural winter coat of a wild red fox. Fig has several genetic issues due to improper breeding, but the issue that plagues him the most is his extremely dense coat which unlike the other foxes, grows out multiple times a year. He has more undercoat than top coat which means his coat isn’t as protected from the elements and allows much more dirt to settle within his fur causing tangles and mats if I don’t regularly help him remove his blown coat. This process doesn’t hurt him at all and he seems to really enjoy it. I enjoy it too. It’s oddly really satisfying.
