Knossos: Europe’s First City and the Palace of Legends Long before Athens rose or Rome was founded, there was Knossos—a vast palace-city that stood at the heart of Europe’s first great civilization. The site was first settled around 7000 BCE, but the first palace emerged around 1900 BCE, launching the Protopalatial period of the Minoans. After an earthquake, it was rebuilt around 1700 BCE, beginning the Neopalatial period, when Knossos reached its peak.
