BMW’s M division is introducing a new twin-ignition system called M Ignite to extend the life of its combustion engines. The new technology will allow the M2, M3, and M4 to meet stringent Euro 7 emissions regulations, which come into force in November 2026. Fitted to the S58 inline six-cylinder engine, M Ignite features a pre-chamber ignition process, which has been designed to reduced fuel consumption at higher engine revs. The pre-chamber sits within the cylinder head and is connected to the cylinder’s main combustion chamber. Each pre-chamber gets its own spark plug and ignition coil. Here’s how M Ignite comes together to increase efficiency: At low and medium revs the engine operates as normal, with the spark plugs in the main combustion chambers firing before the plugs in the pre-chamber. At, higher revs, however, the reverse happens and the pre-chamber leads the charge. The fuel air mixture is channeled into the pre-chamber first where it ignites. The flame front exits into the main chamber at supersonic speed as an “ignition jet” which instantly ignites the fuel-air mix in the main chamber. This significantly increases the speed of combustion. Added benefits include the elimination of knocking, and a reduction in exhaust gas temperatures. BMW says the sound of the engine is unaltered by M Ignite, and the S58 retains its performance characteristics, while using less fuel, especially when driven hard.
