Women restarting life at 40 don’t talk about this… I had a plan for my life. It didn’t go that way. Visa denied. Business failed. Husband on the other side of the world. Back at my mother’s house at 41 with nothing I planned to have. I used to think that meant I was doing something wrong. Now I realise — failure is not the opposite of success. It’s part of the path. Every strong woman you admire online? She has a version of this story. She just kept going long enough to tell it differently. So today, I’m not pretending I have it together. Here are 5 (of the many) things I wish I knew at 47 1. We’re actually NOT Superwoman - we can’t outrun our nervous system: Pushing harder when we’re already depleted doesn’t make us stronger. We might feel like we’re Superwoman at the time, but ultimately it just makes us more broken. Taking rest periods isn’t a show of weakness. Look for, or create, opportunities to rest. Rest repairs and makes us stronger. 2. Other people’s comfort is not our responsibility: We were not put here to make everyone else feel okay about who we are. That job was never ours to take on. Yes, we care for others, but when did that become at the expense of taking care of ourselves? 3. Asking for help is a power move: The women who thrive in midlife are not the ones who do it all alone. They’re the ones who got good at asking. Whether it’s delegating some chores to your partner / kids or asking friends for help, it won’t just free you up a bit, it also strengthens the bonds between you. People love to help, it makes them feel needed. They just have to be asked. 4. Silence is information When someone shows you who they are through what they don’t say, don’t do, don’t show up for - believe it. “Actions speak louder than words” may well be a cliche, but it’s a cliche for a reason. 5. The version of you at 57 that you build now will thank you then. Every boundary you set, every habit you build, every time you choose yourself in your 40s and 50s - future you will reap the benefits so just start now. No apologies to anyone needed. Just start. Maybe you didn’t peak your 20s or 30s. Maybe you don’t feel like you have it all figured out even at 40. Don’t worry. Last year, turning 39 felt like stalling out—I was actually wishing I could just skip ahead and be 40 already. Why? Honestly, I think it’s because even in my 20s, people always said I had the soul of a 40-year-old. And maybe they were right. Because here, in this season of life, my soul is shining brighter than ever. The best part? I decided that would be true. This life I’m living feels like a dream—some days I have to pinch myself. I love the woman I’ve become. I feel strong in my skin, confident as a mom, a wife, a business owner, and a leader. I spent years chasing perfection in all of those roles—and then I found my peace in just being real. I remember turning 20 and spiraling into a quarter-life crisis, convinced I hadn’t done enough. At 30, I was dreaming of a family and feeling like something was missing. But somewhere between 30 and 40… I found it all. **Shout out to my husband who plays a pivotal role in loving me and supporting me, allowing me to be all the things above! Entering my 40s forced me to stop guessing & start training, fueling & living with intention. If I wanted to feel strong, lean, mentally clear & confident, these 10 became non-negotiables: -Under-eating & random nutrition: I stopped eating less & started eating enough. Protein became the priority, around 1.2–1.6 g per kg body weight. Meals built around protein, not snacks -Fad diets & quick fixes: Extreme plans don’t work long term. I focused on balanced meals, consistency & sustainability. -Treating cardio like the solution: Cardio alone doesn’t reshape your body. Strength training became essential for metabolism. -Training without a plan: Random workouts give random results. I shifted to a more structured approach. -Believing more workouts meant better results: Recovery matters more now. Training hard + recovering well is the goal. -Ignoring daily movement: Exercise is only one part. 7,000–10,000 steps daily support fat loss & metabolic health. -Guessing portion sizes: Eating clean isn’t enough if intake is off. Understanding what your body needs changes everything. -Poor hydration habits: Dehydration affects energy, digestion & performance. I aim for roughly half my body weight in ounces of water daily. -Sacrificing sleep: Sleep is not optional. 7–8 hrs is essential for hormones, recovery & fat loss. -Letting stress run unchecked: Managing stress, creating boundaries & protecting my peace became part of my routine, not an afterthought.
