Here’s what they said they needed most: 1️⃣ “I needed my feelings to be taken seriously, not dismissed as overreacting.” So many adults shared that they weren’t being dramatic — they were overwhelmed and unheard. 2️⃣ “I needed someone to help me calm my body before correcting my behaviour.” Emotional regulation isn’t automatic. It’s a skill that needs to be taught with patience. 3️⃣ “I needed patience with things that seemed ‘easy’ to everyone else.” Executive function struggles were often misunderstood as laziness, leaving behind deep shame. 4️⃣ “I needed a parent who understood I wasn’t being difficult on purpose.” This came up again and again. They wanted understanding, not punishment. 5️⃣ “I needed a safe place to fall apart, not a perfect child to perform.” This one stayed with me. Connection mattered more than compliance. Reading these responses changed how I see everything. Not from guilt — but from clarity. From finally seeing the child behind the behaviour. It’s a reminder that: The emotional tone of our home matters. The language we use matters. How we support emotional awareness, co-regulation, and nervous system safety matters more than we realise. Our children are living this story right now. What we model today becomes their inner voice tomorrow. If you want to create a calmer emotional environment, stop yelling, and truly understand what your ADHD child needs beneath the behaviour, support makes all the difference. ✨ Comment “ADHD” and I’ll send you the link to my ADHD eBook #StopYelling #ADHDParenting #GentleParenting #EmotionalRegulation #ConsciousParenting #PositiveDiscipline #CalmParenting #NeurodivergentKids #ParentingWithConnection #ParentingTools #PeacefulHome #ADHDSupport #ParentingEducation #MindfulParenting

This might look like “bad behavior.” It’s not. So many ADHD behaviors go unseen — or misunderstood — because they don’t “look” like the typical signs. But when we understand what’s really going on in the brain, it all starts to make sense. What looks like: • Ignoring you when you speak • Overreacting to “small” problems • Being bossy with friends • Refusing to do something they just did yesterday • Talking nonstop or interrupting constantly Could actually be: • Auditory processing overload • A nervous system stuck in fight or flight • A need for control because their world feels chaotic • Executive function breakdowns under pressure • Rejection sensitivity or emotional flooding Kids with ADHD aren’t choosing to be difficult. Their brains are working overtime just to keep up — and sometimes that shows up in ways we don’t expect. When we understand the why, we can support the how. That’s where emotional regulation starts: with safety, connection, and support. Taming Big Emotions helps you decode the behavior and build emotional skills that last. “But they’re always gonna rely on external rewards!” Actually , that’s not how it works. You can’t say enough positive things. Yes, we all have an inner part of ourselves that responds to praise and simple reinforcement. And yes, it’s your job to actively cultivate a sense of intrinsic motivation alongside the external. 🧠 ADHD & Neurodivergent parents…who can relate? If we’re going to talk about it, let’s talk about the whole picture. Not just the wins, the polished version or the famous neurodivergent people. 🎥The internet often shows the highlight reel. But ADHD + Dyslexia for us comes with executive function challenges which makes life layered, messy, beautiful & exhausting. 🧹 Organization is one of our struggles, captured here, in a 108 second real life moment in time. This is a “moment” - not a day-in-a-life or a lifetime movie. Life is never one thing…. Sometimes it looks messy. Sometimes it looks overwhelming. Sometimes it looks like doing the best you can in the middle of chaos. 🚨 But that doesn’t mean something is wrong. It doesn’t mean someone is to blame. It means life is real. It means people are human. And it means not everything needs to be perfectly curated to be worthy of being seen. 🫶🏻 This is for the people who relate. For the people living it, not just judging it. ✌🏻 And for everyone else…you can respectfully scroll. #neurodiverse #adhd #adhdparenting #executivefunctioning #dyslexia

To be honest, I DIDN’T think that my daughter has ADHD, but now that I know all that ADHD encompasses, I can think back to MANY things. ⭐️ Next level toddler tantrums…that she hasn’t grown out of. Kids with ADHD have a hard time regulating their emotions. ⭐️ Easily distracted. Kids with ADHD just go with what is most interesting to them in the moment without giving any thought to anything else. In kindergarten, Skylar went missing for 30 minutes. She was found in the bathroom playing with the soap suds in the sink. ⭐️ Inability to focus. When Skylar was in the 1st grade, she would come home with HOURS worth of homework to do. Come to find out, she was bringing home “stop folder” work. In other words, the teacher would give them work in class, then when it was time to move on the next activity, she would say “stop” and the kids would put any unfinished work in a folder to be done at home. She wasn’t doing ANYTHING in class. ⭐️ Trouble sleeping. ADHD kids have a hard time turning off their brains…which results in them having a HARD time falling asleep. Skylar would be up for HOURS after we had put her to bed. ⭐️ Sensory Processing Disorder. Turns out, this is common in kids with ADHD. Skylar has always been sensitive to the feel of things as well as sounds. There are more…so many more. But these are some of her struggles that made me start talking about her…which ultimately led us down the path to an officially diagnosis of ADHD Inattentive Type. Listen to your mama gut. If something feels off, it probably is. Pay close attention and talk to people. You’ll find the help you need. It definitely takes a village to raise these amazing kids!

I used to talk more when my kid melted down—because I didn’t know what else to do. Every ADHD parent has tried to “talk their kid down” in the middle of a meltdown. I used to do it too. Gently. Patiently. Calmly. But logic doesn’t land when your child’s brain is in fight-or-flight. They’re not processing… they’re surviving. And all those calm explanations? They sound like pressure. Like control. Like you’re not listening. You can’t talk someone out of a flood. You have to co-regulate them through it. That’s what SHIFT gives you. SHIFT is my self-paced video course for ADHD parents who want to stay calm in the chaos—but need more than just mindset. It’s where you get the actual tools that work during the meltdown. Subscribe to my newsletter to get on the waitlist. Link’s in my bio. Many parents believe that more discipline will solve challenging behaviors, but it’s a common misunderstanding. Traditional discipline often works on the idea that kids intentionally choose to misbehave. However, for a child with ADHD, their behavior is often a form of communication, a reaction rooted in how their unique brain processes the world. When you consistently use punishments, timeouts, or strict consequences, it can overwhelm their nervous system. Instead of learning calm or control, their brain often internalizes feelings of shame and confusion. This shame doesn’t lead to better behavior; instead, it can fuel more dysregulation and make those challenging moments even harder to manage. Here’s what truly helps to create positive change and understanding: 1. Focus on connection before correction. This means actively regulating with your child, not a gainst them. Offer comfort and understanding first, creating a safe space for them to process their emotions. 2. Create clear, consistent routines. Predictable schedules and expectations reduce guesswork and anxiety, helping your child feel more secure and understand what’s coming next throughout their day. 3. Teach skills in calm moments. The middle of a meltdown isn’t the time for lessons. Instead, work on new tools and strategies when everyone is settled and receptive, building their capacity for self-regulation over time. Children with ADHD don’t need tougher discipline or more consequences. What they truly need are specific tools, patient coaching, and parents who deeply understand how their unique brain actually works and how to support it effectively. Ready to shift from frustration and shame to real understanding and effective strategies? I have limited spots for a quick call to help you apply these powerful approaches in your family.
