Gardening is so therapeutic. The connection to the earth, soil, the beneficial physical activity, joys of a harvest, problem-solving skills we develop, time in nature, the benefits are endless. It doesn’t have to be anything huge or take up all of our time, a few pots, a few hours at a community garden, we can reap the benefits of gardening. I personally find gardening extremely therapeutic & healing. The slow work with my hands helps my brain to work out issues or past burdens unlike anything I’ve tried before. I feel like I don’t come alive until gardening season. This season we are moving my flowers to a field of their own so my garden can just be my zen oasis. Of course there will still be flowers in my garden, but I think keeping a business portion of my life separate from my sanctuary will be very beneficial. Tell me, if you garden, what is your favorite thing to grow? And if you don’t, what’s holding you back? I’d love to help! Hurry up Spring!

Scientists estimate there were roughly 4 BILLION American chestnut trees in the Eastern United States before the blight hit in the early twentieth century. The American chestnut was one of the most abundant and productive trees in North America at the time, growing up to 100 feet tall on average and producing tons of nutrient-rich nuts every year. American chestnuts were a critical part of forest ecosystems and a prized source of food and timber 🌰 Then, in 1904, a blight hit the American chestnut trees in the Bronx Zoo. This blight was a fungal disease that killed the trees’ inner bark, which hindered the flow of nutrients and water to the leaves, flowers, and stems. By 1940, the American chestnut was considered functionally extinct💔 What does “functionally extinct” mean? “Functional extinction” refers to when a species is no longer viable, i.e. no longer able to reproduce. Despite its demise as a lumber and nut crop species, the American chestnut is not fully extinct. The blight cannot kill the underground root system as the fungus is unable to compete with soil microorganisms. Stump sprouts grow vigorously in cutover or disturbed sites where there is plenty of sunlight, but inevitably succumb to the blight. This cycle of death and rebirth has kept the species alive, though most plants are not able to make it to maturity and produce fruit 🌱 This is why researchers from The American Chestnut Foundation (@theamericanchestnutfoundation) have been working to breed an American chestnut that is resistant to the blight, and why the New York Restoration Project wants YOU to gather data to help further this research 🤝 For more information and to join the #1000ChestnutChallenge, go to nyrp.org/chestnut 🌰

Results from our winter sowing workshop are in! In early January we started these babies from seed. Step 1: procure empty plastic jugs 🥛 Step 2: cut plastic jug in half just under the handle and poke drainage holes in the bottom ✂️ Step 3: fill the bottom half of your jug with soil 🪴 Step 4: sow your seeds according the instructions on the seed packet 🌱 Step 5: water 💦 Step 6: tape the jug closed, label what seeds you started and remove cap 🏷️ Step 7: set your jug outside and forget about it We will plant these outdoors in the next couple of weeks! The winter sowing method works best with cold hardy plants. We started lupine, penstamon, rudbekia, and sweet peas. #fieldsmarketgarden #urbanfarming #carmelindiana #communitygarden #wintersowing
