We often think of Blood Clots (DVT) as random lightning strikes. "It just happened." As a vascular surgeon, I can tell you that while genetics play a role, the difference between a healthy recovery and a life-threatening Pulmonary Embolism often comes down to Daily Habits. The people who stay safe don't just "hope" for the best. They actively manage their "Vascular Vitals." Here is what separates the two groups: 1️⃣ They Understand "Viscosity" (Hydration) 💧 The At-Risk Group: Drinks coffee all morning and wine at night. Their blood is thick, sticky, and moves like sludge. The Safe Group: Treats water like medicine. They dilute their blood naturally by drinking 2-3 liters a day. Hydrated blood flows; dehydrated blood clots. 2️⃣ They Don't Trust the "Desk" (Movement) 🪑 The At-Risk Group: Powers through a 4-hour Zoom block without moving. They let blood pool in their legs, creating a breeding ground for clots. The Safe Group: Triggers their "Calf Pump" every 60 minutes. They stand, they pace, they flex. They know that stagnant blood is dangerous blood. 3️⃣ They Listen to the "Cramp" (Speed) ⚡ The At-Risk Group: Feels a deep, throbbing pain in one leg and says, "I probably just pulled a muscle. I'll wait a week." The Safe Group: Recognizes that a "Charlie Horse" that doesn't go away is a red flag. They get an ultrasound immediately. Speed saves lives. The Reality: You cannot control your genes, but you can control your flow. Which group are you in today? Drop a "💧" if you’re grabbing a glass of water right now. Wondering what to do when you suspect a DVT? Here’s a quick, practical guide! If your patient has low to moderate pre-test probability, start with a D-dimer—negative results can rule out DVT and save your patient from unnecessary imaging. 🚫 If suspicion is high, don’t wait—order a Doppler ultrasound to locate the thrombus right away! ✅

April 1st Wow it’s been One Year Today since I had my knee operation 🦵 After being mowed down in Woolworths by an old man on a mobility scooter 🛴 Waited 2 years on the public health system to try and fix my knee as the chondral flap detached… I ended up with a DVT and then SONK… Was on crutches 🩼 for 5 months… One year and still recovering… One year of physiotherapy to get me back walking …. One year of absolute poo 💩 I’ve come a long way to where I’m at now and tomorrow I go back to see the surgeon for the year check up… Just wanna say a Big Thank You to everyone who followed my knee journey and gave me lots of support during the past year 🥰 Even though I’m still in pain and still wondering if my knee will ever be the same again …..at least up and about and appreciate that I can walk 🙌 #kneesurgeryrecovery #chondralflapdetachment #dvt #sonk #physiotherapy

Even short flights can trigger blood clots. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) starts when blood flow in the legs slows down, and if that clot travels to the lungs, it becomes a pulmonary embolism. Moving your legs, staying hydrated, and using compression socks can make a big difference. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Follow @mamastefit for more tips on pregnancy, birth, and postpartum DVT is a blood clot that can form in the deep veins of our extremities, most commonly in the lower ones. During pregnancy we are at a FIVEFOLD increased risk of developing a DVT because: 🔸increase in our blood volume that needs to be circulated in our body 🔸increase in our clotting factors to prevent blood loss at birth makes it easier for our bodies to form clots 🔸increase pelvic congestion makes it harder for blood flow to get to the lower extremity as the baby grows What should you monitor for? 🔺pain or tenderness in the extremities 🔺swelling (usually one sided) 🔺redness or hot to touch spots on the lower extremities 🔺positive homans sign Why is this a problem? 🔹The blood clot could dislodge itself and travel to our lungs, this is a medical EMERGENCY 🔷if you notice any shortness of breath or difficulty breathing or chest pain that’s worse when taking a deep breath or cough SEEK HELP IMMEDIATELY Had you heard about this complication during pregnancy? DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS Often has to do with decreased blood flow, increased tendency to clot, changes to blood vessels, and inflammation. Which means that naturally one of the best ways to counter DVT is through muscular contractions and massage (plus a diet that helps keep inflammation under control). Here are a few simple exercises to help: 1) Plantar resisted pumps Lie back holding a light band at both ends place your foot in the middle and extend your leg so you’re sitting tall. Take as much slack as you can out of the band pulling your ankle into dorsiflexion and stretching your calf muscles. Press the foot away from you flexing the calf muscles for 5-10s maxing the contraction and then relax allowing the band to pull you deeper into dorsiflexion. Spend 2 minutes going between these two positions. 2) Plantar resisted ankle circles Same setup as above. Now start to draw as big of a circle as possible with your foot and ankle. Take your time and really max out the ROM. Spend 1 minute moving in one direction and reverse for a second. 3) Dorsi resisted pumps Anchor your band low on a post. Place the band behind your heel and cross it over the top of your foot making an X and interlacing it between your big toe and smallest toe. Allow the band to pull you into plantar flexion reaching as far away as you can with your toes. Then dorsiflex into the X reaching the top of your foot for your shin. Hold for 5-10s before relaxing into plantar again. 2 minutes. 4) Dorsi resisted ankle circles Same setup as above with the band on the foot. Pull the knee toward your chest holding behind it. Draw that same big circle as you did before spending 1 minute in each direction. 5) Calf saw Start in a tall kneeling position with the top of your feet flat to the floor. Place a foam roller over the back of your lower legs. Starting near your heels and working up in the direction of your knees apply pressure to the foam roller from your arms pressing down and sitting some of the weight of your body back on the roller. Shift your weight side to side compressing the tissues to encourage blood flow back in the directions of the heart.
