Upright rows are fine for people with large subacromial space. But for a lot of people not so much. Here’s what impinges shoulders. 1. Having your elbow by your side when you pull up (frontal plane) moving your elbow slightly out in front frees up a lot more space. 2. Pulling your elbow even with or above the level of shoulder with your wrist lower than your elbow. During the high pull my goal is not to get my elbow above my shoulder. It’s simply to drive my elbows up while I shrug my shoulders. I forcefully apply external rotation near the top of the movement and get my hands to at least elbow height. This ensures some space is opened up in my shoulder joint at the top where impingement normally occurs. I then stack my elbows over my shoulders on the way down while hinging slightly. Then we finish with standing lateral raises for the side delts—slow on the way down, squeeze hard at the top. Control creates shape. Intensity without recovery is just damage. The MJM is about maximum stimulation with minimum unnecessary wear and tear. Form first. Precision first. Longevity first. That’s how you build shoulders that look powerful and perform.
