MOEU plan to stop deforestation faces backlash.
The @europeanparliament and the world’s rainforests are linked by a piece of legislation called the EU Deforestation Regulation, or the EUDR.
Environmentalists in Europe fought hard for the EUDR, which aims to keep products like beef, palm oil and cocoa out of EU countries unless producers can prove they are not linked to deforestation after 2020. The goal is to ensure European consumers are not driving forest destruction every time they eat a chocolate bar or sip a cappuccino.
But the EUDR has faced a difficult path, meeting opposition from the EU’s growing right-wing bloc and countries like Malaysia, which argue the requirements are too burdensome for companies to meet.
The law was passed in 2023, but late last year the European Parliament delayed its implementation for one year, the second such delay. Now, concerns are mounting over whether the regulation will ever take effect.
This delay is part of a broader backlash against environmental policy in the European Union.
