Rather than seeing challenging emotions such as anger, fear, grief or shame as being wrong or 'in the way' we can learn to work with these emotions and see them as guideposts back to self care. We all have human needs such as the need for love, for friendship, for safety and belonging. When these needs are threatened or unmet we'll often experience discomfort emotionally.... When we make the emotions 'wrong' or quickly try to bypass them by 'checking out' with busyness, distraction, numbing or noise we lose the potential message they are pointing to. When we instead 'check' in and allow some space for the emotion we can often be guided to ways in which we can better love and care for ourselves. A practice of 3 simple questions is a great place to start- 👉 How do I feel? 👉What do I need? 👉How can I meet that need in a healthy way? Another way of thinking about this is to explore some of the unhealthy habits we find ourselves stuck in. What do I feel and need before I turn to those behaviours?
