Explanations ↓ 1. The obsession? Limerence? ❤️‍🩹That’s (among other things) the abandonment wound at work. Feeling emotionally un-attuned to as a child creates an emotional abandonment wound. This leaves us with a hunger, a yearning, to finally have those needs met ~ to fill the gap, to heal the wound. And so, we tend to fixate on people who (similarly our caregivers) feel hard to attain or offer us inconsistent affirmation. The subconscious narrative goes: “if this person - who feels so unavailable & challenging - finally chooses me, it’s proof to my inner child that I’m worthy, after all…” 2. when we don’t feel safe in our body, when our parents don’t gently explain the world to us, we learn to go up into our mind to survive. Living in your head - analysing, unpacking, overthinking - provided you with a sense of predictability outside of the uncomfortable unpredictability of your reality. 3. Co-regulation is something we all deserve in childhood. This is when we learn to regulate in community, in connection, with safe others. When this doesn’t happen, we don’t feel safe being seen in our pain. We don’t feel safe being seen vulnerable. So we isolate & deal with it alone, as we did in childhood Note- there can be other roots for all of these & nothing is written in stone. On the surface, Staying Still is about the anxiety of a romantic partner leaving... But the bridge is about something deeper: the protective strategies of the kid who learned to make themself easier to love. As a therapist, when I hear: “Nevermind, nevermind I’ll forget about it I’ll be good I’ll be fine I can laugh about it” I hear the narrator’s inner child. These words feel young to me. They sound like a kid who learned to fawn - to appease the threat of disconnection and stay attached to the people he needed most. The kid who says: "If I’m good, will you stay?” "If I forget about it, will you stay?” "If I brush it off and laugh about it, will you stay?” These are young, unconscious survival strategies: disavowing his own needs and emotions to preserve connection. As kids, we do not have much choice. We have survival instincts. We depend on our caregivers for safety, so we adapt to preserve the lifeline. And if you were the responsible, easy kid no one had to worry about - the one who tried to make everyone comfortable, avoid trouble, and need less - these words cut straight to the soul of your inner child. What’s even more illuminating is that it is an adult speaking these words- stuck on Storrow driving his partner to the airport. The present-day threat of disconnection reactivates younger defenses - survival strategies first developed when connection felt tenuous. Here we see the past living through the present: younger parts of self taking over in an adult romantic relationship to try to get their need for connection met. So yes, Staying Still is about the anxiety of a romantic partner leaving. But deeper than that, it’s about the ways we learned to protect connection when it felt tenuous. #noahkahan #stayingstill #innerchild #therapist

➡️How many have you lived through? What would you add? The maturity level of your parent plays a foundational role in how you develop. If you were raised by someone who was emotionally immature, it’s important to sincerely acknowledge the impact this can leave behind. Growing up in that environment can create deep attachment wounds such as fear of abandonment, difficulty trusting others, people-pleasing, a constant sense of not being ‘enough’ etc. For some, the ripple effects can even contribute to complex-PTSD. Your nervous system learned to adapt to an environment that couldn’t meet your emotional needs. The work of healing is learning to give yourself what you didn’t receive,plus choose people who give that to you too, so that you can rewire your sense of safety, connection & self-worth. And remember: you can have a deep Love & compassion for your parents AND acknowledge that your upbringing wasn’t ideal. Both truths can coexist. This isn’t about blame games, it’s about healing. P.S.
