4 types of runs to IMPROVE your marathon training πŸ’―πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ’₯ (SAVE IT!) By adding variety to your training, you’ll become stronger, faster, and more efficient. These are the four types of runs I use in my marathon training: 1) Long runs 2) Intervals 3) Steady runs 4) Easy runs #marathontraining #marathonrunning #runnerslife #runningworkout

Marathon training gets real when your long runs hit half marathon distance every weekend. Once you’re running 21km plus regularly, this isn’t just going for a run anymore. This is the part of a marathon training block where endurance is built, fatigue stacks up, and recovery actually matters. If you’re training for your first marathon or chasing a time goal, this is where things shift. #marathontraining #marathonrunner #runnersofinstagram #running #longrun

I used the run-walk method to complete my first four marathons. I ran a time of 4:05 by walking for the first minute of every mile. This kept my legs energized, allowing me to negative split. β€” The first book I ever read on marathon training was by @jeffgallowayolympian ❀️ He passed away yesterday, which is a loss for the running community. His book and his run-walk approach made running a marathon seem achievable for me. And his approach works for runners of all levels. I once met a woman who ran a 3:30 marathon using the Galloway run-walk method. Thanks Jeff Galloway for everything you've given the running community. ❀️❀️❀️

You should NOT run a marathon... until you can do these 8 things πŸ‘€πŸ‘‡πŸ» Run Your First Marathon 004 ‼️ Remember to SAVE and SHARE this post if you’re thinking about running your first ever marathon ‼️ I genuinely believe everyone is *capable* of running a marathon one day, but the right preparation is super important if you want to do it safely and actually enjoy the process (which imo, is the most important part πŸ₯Ή). 1️⃣ You can run at least 15km comfortably That’s roughly a third of a marathon distance. Most plans build long runs up to 30-32km over 16-20 weeks (with deloads every 4 weeks), so if 15km already wipes you out, more consistent running is the answer right now. 2️⃣ You have a healthy relationship with food Marathon training means eating more than you’re probably used to (more carbs in particular), and you really do need to be ok with that. Poor nutrition tanks your performance and increases injury risk, period. 3️⃣ You can handle 35-40km per week You should be able to do this without feeling constantly sore or exhausted or mentally drained, because the marathon is about consistent weekly mileage, not one heroic long run. 4️⃣ You strength train at least once a week without fail Strong legs are marathon legs, and it also improves your running form and economy too πŸ’ͺ🏻 5️⃣ You know your β€œwhy” Not because everyone on your social media feed is running marathons, but because you genuinely want this for yourself. When it gets hard (and trust me, it wil), that reason is what’s going to carry you through to the finish line πŸ… 6️⃣ You’ve been running for at least a year Why? Because you need an aerobic foundation built through months of consistent zone 2 work, and that genuinely just takes TIME. 7️⃣ You prioritise recovery Sleep especially, but also the small things like foam rolling, massage gun, rest days, and deload weeks. Recover is just as important as the running. 8️⃣ You can run truly easy Most marathon training is easy running, and if you can’t slow down and run while holding a conversation, you’re going to burn out. Follow for episode 5 πŸ€©πŸ’š

For 8 weeks I removed every long and easy run. No 60–90 minute aerobic sessions. No β€œzone 2 shuffle” miles. I kept: β€’ Threshold running β€’ Interval running Everything else? Cycling. Here’s what happened. My threshold pace improved. ~5 seconds per km faster Across 4 Γ— 8 minute efforts With shorter rest (90s instead of 2 minutes). My glute niggles disappeared. My hips stopped feeling tight. My legs felt fresher between sessions. Here’s why that’s not magic. Aerobic adaptations are largely central. When you improve: β€’ Stroke volume β€’ Cardiac output β€’ Mitochondrial density β€’ Capillary networks Your heart doesn’t care whether the stimulus came from running or cycling. VOβ‚‚ max and lactate threshold can be maintained (even improved) through cross-training. But running carries a higher recovery cost. Higher ground reaction forces. More eccentric muscle damage. Greater tendon load. More impact debt. As a heavier hybrid athlete, the cost of long aerobic runs was limiting my quality sessions. Cycling gave me: The aerobic stimulus With lower tissue stress Better recovery Higher quality threshold work Which meant better performance. Now… does this mean long runs don’t matter? No. If you’re: β€’ Marathon training β€’ Building race-specific running economy β€’ Preparing for long-distance events Long runs are essential. But if you’re: β€’ Injury-prone β€’ A heavier runner β€’ Already running hard twice per week β€’ Struggling to recover Replacing some easy volume with low-impact aerobic work might be smarter. Fitness isn’t just about adding stimulus. It’s about managing cost. When you reduce recovery cost, performance compounds faster. If you’re interested in smarter hybrid training and structured programming that balances performance with longevity, Go through the rest of my page @anthony__dipaolo That’s exactly the kind of insight I give regularly! And if you want structured coaching built properly, the links are in my bio. #running #cycling

An honest update at where I’m currently at with London marathon training πŸ’– I put on my stories last week about how I had to swap out my long run and just felt like a massive failure because I had such a mental block and couldn’t see the run through. You guys CAME THROUGH, I honestly don’t think I’ve ever had so many messages telling me your struggles with marathon training and it made me feel so normal and supported!! So here’s a very honest week of marathon training (excluding x 2 strength sessions because they’re so boring I don’t even wanna talk about them). #londonmarathon
