Reviewing for end of year math tests doesn’t need to be over the top to be effective. Sometimes a simple idea goes a long way in getting students to think deeper. The question quest is a quick prep activity where you give students the topic and the solution… and students create the problem! Want the free template (so you can prep this in no time)? One of my favorite ways to practice multiple choice problems! We always ask students why they think an answer is correct, but rarely ask them to explain why the wrong answers don’t make sense. This helps with multiple choice problems because students practice eliminating the answers that don’t make sense! If this is something that would benefit your students, let me know in the comments! #testprep #fourthgrade #fifthgrade #4thgrademath #5thgrademath

Test-taking strategies are SO important and sometimes students need a refresher. This test-taking strategies wheel is excellent to help review strategies before state testing season…especially if you haven’t talked about test-taking strategies in a while. Students will keep making the same mistake until they actually analyze it. And most of the time what we do is: ✏️ Correct the answer ✏️ Explain it again ✏️ Move on to the next problem But the real learning happens when students slow down and ask: 🧠 What went wrong here? 🧠 Where did the thinking break down? 🧠 How would we fix it? That’s exactly why I include error analysis activities inside my Mastery Kits — like these pop-up tents with real student work samples and intentional mistakes. Inside the kits you’ll also find things like: 📂 Math Hack folders that break down tricky vocabulary and concepts 🧩 Matching & sorting activities to reinforce connections between ideas 🎮 Digital board games for skill review ✅ Mastery checks so you can quickly see who’s actually getting it Instead of you explaining the mistake again… students do the thinking. If you want access to these and all the other resources inside my 7th Grade, 8th Grade, and Algebra 1 resource library ➡️ comment SQUAD and I’ll send you the details.

As you start the new year, and begin to dive back into math, exit slips are a great tool to check in with students to see which skills they retained over break and which need to be reviewed. Use them to identify gaps, guide small groups, and track progress throughout the year! These math exit slips are available for 2nd to 5th grade and cover all the common core math standards for each grade level. Use the link in my bio to find your grade level! You can also comment below with the words “MATH EXIT” to have a link sent to your messages. #mathexitslips #3rdgrade #4thgrade #5thgrade

Instead of reviewing everything right before a test (and realizing half the class forgot it), spiral review keeps skills fresh all year long. Students revisit what they’ve already learned in small, manageable chunks, so concepts actually stick and you can quickly see who needs support before it becomes a bigger problem. You want it to be meaningful. You want students actually thinking about functions, transformations, models, asymptotes, and trig relationships they learned all year. But what often happens instead? 1️⃣ You plan a thoughtful review packet. But within five minutes… ➡️ half the class skips around looking for easy problems ➡️ someone asks “do we have to do all of them?” ➡️ three students open Photomath ➡️ and a few kids just wait for you to start solving it on the board. So the review becomes compliance instead of thinking. 2️⃣ You try whole class review. But now the same two confident students answer everything while everyone else copies the work without processing it. The room looks busy. Understanding is questionable. 3️⃣ You realize review week is not really about doing more problems. It is about helping students reconnect ideas they learned months apart. Quadratics → functions Exponential models → transformations Rational graphs → asymptotes and restrictions Students need to see the patterns across the course, not just redo isolated problems. 4️⃣ You try small group work. But if the task is still just a packet, students divide and conquer instead of actually discussing the math. 5️⃣ You realize the review tasks that actually work are the ones that create interaction. Games. Challenges. Competition. Explaining thinking out loud. Students stay engaged because they are doing something with the math, not just filling blanks. That is exactly why I created my Algebra 2 Test Review Game Bundle. Instead of another packet, students review through structured games that get them solving, discussing, and checking answers while staying engaged during review week. 💬 Comment REVIEW and I’ll send you the details. And follow for more Algebra 2 strategies that make teaching feel doable in real classrooms.
