I thought OCD meant my life was over, that I would never experience the before, that OCD was the after. I remember feeling like my brain would never function “normally” again, that I would never not have 24/7 rapid fire intrusive thoughts that terrorized me. . I was wrong. . There is an after the OCD, too ❤️ I don’t currently meet diagnostic criteria for OCD. I have soooooo much more space in my brain. I don’t experience repetitive intrusive thoughts (I do get them occasionally). I am 97% better. I am writing a memoir about my lived experience with OCD to share with the world. . One of the hardest parts of OCD is feeling like you’ve lost your identity and life forever. You haven’t. It gets better. I needed to see that when I was struggling. . . . . . . . . . . . . . #ocd #ocdawareness #ocdrecovery #pocd #harmocd #pureo #intrusivethoughtsawareness #intrusivethoughts #ocdrecovery #anxiety #therapy #therapistsofinstagram #neurodivergent #postpartumocd #perinatalmentalhealth #ocdawarenessweek #pureo #cptsd #traumahealing #recovery #ocdproblems #ocdsupport

Visual representation of the OCD and Non-OCD brain. I break down how compulsions (like checking, seeking reassurance, or avoiding) might feel helpful in the moment, but strengthen the anxiety in the long term. Learning how to tolerate uncertainty is what actually helps the brain heal from OCD. #ocd #ocdawareness #ocdrecovery #intrusivethoughts #compulsions #erptherapy #ocdtherapy #ocdtherapy

I have OCD. And if I don’t actively treat it, it runs my life. This is what compulsive handwashing can look like for me. Not because I want to. But because my brain sounds the alarm like something terrible will happen if I don’t. The thought that “I’ll contaminate my home or my children” feels like a certainty and I’ll have failed as a mother to protect them. This is both contamination OCD and Harm OCD OCD isn’t just about germs or harm though. It’s about fear and it’s about intrusive thoughts. It’s about a nervous system trying to protect me the only way it knows how. The way it has since I was 5 years old. So I practice ERP. Exposure and Response Prevention. Because OCD doesn’t get better with reassurance. It gets better when I resist the compulsion and sit with uncertainty. Every time I sit with the anxiety instead of obeying it, I teach my brain: we are safe even when we don’t know we are for certain. I choose this work so my kids get a present mom, not a fear-driven one. Recovery is uncomfortable, consistent, and a lot of work. # But staying trapped is worse. #OCDRecovery #ERPtherapy #AnxietyHealing #TheGroundedPath

Sometimes OCD doesn’t look like fear… it looks like a child trying really hard to be a good person. Asking over and over: “Is this wrong?” “Did I do something bad?” Confessing things they may or may not have done. Needing permission for even simple things. Avoiding anything that feels “bad” or wrong. Apologizing again and again… just to feel okay. This isn’t about honesty or manners. This is OCD getting stuck in a loop around right vs wrong, good vs bad, and never feeling certain enough. And the more we answer, reassure, or fix it for them… the more that loop quietly grows. That’s why learning how to respond matters just as much as recognizing what’s happening. It’s not a mess. It’s a pile of unmade decisions and triggers that I’m drowning in. I’m trying to work on it without overwhelm so I’m dealing with one thing at a time. Today I will make a decision about one thing. I’ll update with what I decided in the comments. I know one decision may seem small, but in the context of a whole day of rebuilding work (going on a walk, finishing a work task, going to class tonight, eating something scary, etc), a small step can feel huge. I’ve found that starting small works better than doing everything at once. Trust me, I tried the other way for a really long time. #ocdrecovery #mentalhealthhumor #rebuildinglife #slowmiles #ocdclean

OCD can latch onto the things your child values most, and twist them into something confusing, uncomfortable, and even terrifying. Not because they want those thoughts… but because OCD targets what matters, and then floods it with doubt. “What if that means something?” “What if this says something about me?” “What if I’m not who I thought I was?” And just like that, ordinary moments, sitting next to a sibling, talking to a teacher, loving a pet, watching a show, can turn into spirals of fear, shame, and avoidance. So your child might: • pull away suddenly • avoid people or situations • overreact in ways that don’t make sense • get stuck trying to “figure it out” From the outside, it can look confusing… or even concerning. But this is OCD, not desire, not identity, not intent. What helps? Start by naming it for what it is, OCD. Avoid trying to reassure or “prove” the thoughts wrong. And know that this is very treatable with the right support, especially with ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) therapy. Most importantly, help your child understand that thoughts are not facts, and they don’t define who they are. Your brain: wait. did I just drink that? 🧠 I don’t remember drinking it. But I also don’t remember NOT drinking it. What if I did and I just forgot? 😰 This is false memory OCD. Your brain manufactures doubt so convincing you genuinely cannot trust your own memory. 🌀 The urge to Google, check your mouth, or call poison control makes complete sense. It also makes the OCD stronger. 📈 Every time you seek reassurance, your brain learns the threat was real. And the loop gets louder. False memory OCD is treatable. 💙 The memory feels real because OCD made it feel that way. Not because it happened. Save this if OCD has ever made you doubt your own mind. 🔖 #ocd #anxiety #erp #ocdrecovery #icbt

Living with anxiety can feel like you’re never actually living… just constantly bracing. Bracing for symptoms. Bracing for bad news. Bracing for the moment your body convinces you this time is different. That hyper-vigilance isn’t weakness. It’s a nervous system that learned survival before safety. And if this reel hit something deep in you you’re not dramatic, broken, or doomed. You’re exhausted from preparing for a threat that never comes. You deserve a life that feels lived, not just survived. #healthanxiety #panicdisorder #ocdrecovery #anxietyrecovery #nervoussystemhealing

ERP ( exposure response prevention) for OCD is extremely hard and difficult, this is my first higher exposure outside of sessions and it was very scary I felt like I did really good through the process. But about 30 minutes after my exposure I started having really bad obsessions, I’ve been in therapy so far for 10 sessions and I’m finally able to notice and understand the difference between a intrusive thought and real thoughts. Or thoughts vs compulsions. #erptherapy #ocd #ocdawareness #ocdrecovery #ocdreels
