In response to the recent headlines about RFK Jr. wanting to change how nutrition is taught in medical school – I agree that nutrition education is important, but I would argue that the problem here lies in the way healthcare is performed in this country. In our traditional, insurance-based system, doctors often aren’t given enough time to truly discuss preventive health, wellness, or delve into nutrition with patients. So unfortunately, it’s often only those of us with a strong personal interest in preventive or integrative medicine who find ways to incorporate nutrition into our practice, usually outside the constraints of the insurance system. You can change medical education all you want, but I believe our doctors receive excellent training in medical school and residency. The real gap lies in how so many are forced to conform to a healthcare system. That is where the missing link lies.
