Pseudoscience: beliefs, practices, or claims that are presented as scientific but lack the empirical evidence, reproducibility, and rigor of credible scientific research. Pseudoscience often uses anecdotal evidence or emotional appeals and personal testimonials in contrast to robust clinical data. In addition, while science adjusts as we accrue more data over time, pseudoscience ignores contradictory data and refuses to change in the presence of those data. Pseudoscience claims exploit jargon to sound scientific, but the topics don’t stand up to scrutiny by the scientific community. Pseudoscience topics do not adhere to the scientific method and don’t undergo peer-review. Unfortunately, pseudoscience is a hallmark of the wellness industry, with claims that use a nugget of truth, but then extrapolate and exaggerate those truths well beyond what is real. Examples include pseudoscience medical conditions like leaky gut, adrenal fatigue, toxic mold syndrome; practices like homeopathy, iridology, chiropractic; and “therapies” like urotherapy, colloidal silver, and more. Pseudoscience can be very insidious and hard to discern from credible science, and it’s used to exploit people who are vulnerable. ➡️Watch the rest of @wired PSEUDOSCIENCE SUPPORT: https://youtu.be/vj71yGp-8WM?si=c2NZ9b6DQQieGC_L ➡️For more, subscribe to my newsletter: immunologic.substack.com #homeopathy #chiropractic #againstpseudoscience #toxicmold #evidencebased #datadriven #scientistlife #scicomm #factsonfacts #leakygut #adrenalfatigue #colloidalsilver #scienceeducation #health #womeninSTEM #factsoverfear #wellness #supplements #immunologist #scientist #sciencefacts #pseudoscience

With a third of the world’s cattle and a population divided between a lactose tolerant north and west and a largely lactose intolerant south and east, milk related misinformation is all over. Further, a rich tradition of dairy that goes back thousands of years was yanked into the modern world thanks to Dr Varghese Kurian’s White Revolution, which took a nutritious but highly perishable product in a country with huge amounts of poverty & malnutrition and managed to make safe milk near universally available to anyone, even those living in cities, even during the pre-home-fridge era. This is a jawdropping achievement that should get as much accolade as UPI or any other digital infrastructure that we are all proud of. But thanks to social media, the proud defenders of ancient tradition have managed to somehow turn this stellar achievement into a quagmire of pseudoscience and misinformation. In this video, with the help of dairy technology @banjaranfoodie’s research, I debunk some of the most common milk myths that we see on social media. If you have heard other myths, leave a comment and we will address those as well! #food #dairy #indianfood #milk #pseudoscience #mythbusters #foodscience #reelkarofeelkarto #reels #reelsofinstagram

DETOX IS A SCAM One of the most common categories of unregulated quackery on the internet is DETOX. The term is used to describe a range of treatments, typically supplements, diets and juices to solve a range of issues from weight loss, gut issues and skin problems. Only problem: THEY DON’T WORK Let me be fair to the good faith folks who genuinely think their herbal concoctions actually remove toxins from the body and believe they have seen results. IT’S NOT THE DRINK. It’s just giving your body a break that allows it to remove toxins. The drink ends up taking all the credit without doing any of the work! To be even more fair to folks who disagree, there are molecules in certain foods that are excellent antioxidants and antimicrobials. These are generally good to consume as part of a regular, healthy diet. But they do nothing to DETOX your body, but may have beneficial properties AS PART OF AN OVERALL HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. #food #foodscience #science #mythbusters #pseudoscience #reels #reelsofinstagram #reelkarofeelkaro

On February 13, 1961, a rock found near Olancha was claimed to be 500,000 years old after being split open to reveal what looked like a modern spark plug, igniting one of the most enduring and disputed anomalies in American history. The object was discovered by three collectors: Wallace Lane, Virginia Maxey, and Mike Mikesell. They were searching the Coso Mountains for mineral bearing nodules. When one rock was cut open with a diamond blade, it revealed a ceramic like cylinder surrounded by a hardened shell. A corroded metal ring and a central electrode were visible. To several observers, the object resembled a spark plug embedded inside stone. Soon after the discovery, the artifact became known as the Coso Artifact. Some early claims asserted that the surrounding material was a natural geode and that the object was hundreds of thousands of years old. Those claims quickly spread through fringe publications and were later amplified by writers interested in ancient advanced civilizations. The problem is that no credible geological testing ever established the age of the surrounding material as ancient. No formal laboratory analysis was published that dated the encasing material to hundreds of thousands of years. The claim of extreme age originated from speculation rather than measurement. More careful examinations suggested a far more ordinary explanation. The outer shell was identified as a hardened mixture of iron oxide and mineral deposits commonly formed by corrosion and concretion. Such coatings can form around modern objects in decades rather than millennia, especially in mineral rich desert environments. Investigators later matched the internal object to early 20th century spark plugs, most closely resembling Champion spark plug models produced in the 1920s. Similar plugs were used in farm equipment, mining machinery, and early automobiles that operated throughout California during that period. Read the rest of the post in the comments!

When trying to critique wellness/diet misinformation, hitting people over the head with science probably isn’t the best approach. Jessica Steier of The Unbiased Science Podcast (@unbiasedscipod) joins us to discuss: 🍃The need for empathy, nuance, and bridge-building in science communication—and why being too strident in calling out misinformation can backfire 🍃Why she’s critical of restrictive diets and other wellness trends while holding space for their proponents to evolve (and why she’s faced backlash for that) 🍃Tribalism in the science community 🍃Our differing views on weight, and why she’s open to learning about the weight-inclusive approach 🍃…and more! DEBUNKING PROTEIN MYTHS Longform version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/9MOjP5OeCa4?si=OUKxmjz1ekND33Ti A while ago, an elderly relative’s doctor gave her the one advice that I think a lot of Indians, particularly the elderly ignore outright - he asked her to eat more protein and cut down carbs. And over the next few months, her family has struggled to get her to do that because she is afraid paneer will increase cholesterol, soya is a waste product and that whey protein will destroy her kidneys. And as a vegetarian, she does not eat eggs. And on top of that, South Indians also can’t consume too much milk given lactose intolerance. And then they believe just dal is enough (it isn’t), and the typical urban Indian meal is really just death by carbs. So please share this with elderly folks in your family. There is a good chance they are not eating enough protein and it is absolutely the one thing that will hugely improve the quality of their life! Protein is quite literally the one thing that fixes broken things in your body given that so much of our critical functions are performed by proteins that our cells make from the amino acids that we get from our diet! #food #indianfood #foodscience #mythbusters #pseudoscience #reels #reelsofinstagram #reelkarofeelkaro
