With ROCD, there’s often a strong urge to ease the anxiety, thought, or feeling, usually by doing something (a compulsion) to relieve the feeling - this may feel like a temporary fix but can reinforce the cycle leading to more distress in the long run. I lived in a dissociative state (derealization) for years when my OCD was loud. I felt disconnected from the world around me, like my surroundings were not sharp and I was a step removed from them. . It was scary but ultimately it was my brain’s way of trying to protect me from 24/7 distress. It was trying to protect me by detaching from the painful emotions and relentless intrusive thoughts and images. . Rumination and mental compulsions can also contribute to dissociative states. . While it can be you brain’s way of trying to protect you from extreme distress, derealization can scare people and cause even more distress. For those with existential obsessions, derealization might feel like “proof” that the world is not real and they are really living in a dream. . The key is to not fight with the derealization, just as we do not fight with anxiety and panic. Mindfulness skills can help us notice the derealization without judgment and without resistance. . While it is scary, derealization (like anxiety or panic) is not dangerous. . [Save and share] If you feel like you need one more sign from God before you move forward in your relationship, I want you to slow down for a moment and really sit with that. Because sometimes it’s not that God hasn’t spoken, it’s that your mind is still looking for a kind of certainty He never promised you. I say this gently, because I know your heart is to honor God. You don’t want to make a mistake, you don’t want to get it wrong, and you don’t want to move ahead without Him. But at some point, constantly asking for another sign can keep you stuck in fear instead of helping you walk in faith. God is not trying to confuse you or keep you guessing. When He leads, it may not come with perfect feelings or complete certainty, but it will not require you to stay in a cycle of constant doubt and checking. So instead of asking, “God, give me another sign,” try asking, “God, help me trust what You’ve already shown me, and give me the wisdom to move forward with You.” You don’t have to rush, but you also don’t have to keep delaying out of fear. Take a step, stay grounded in Him, and allow clarity to grow as you move not just while you’re standing still. And if this is where you’ve been, you’re not alone. God is with you. The #1 reason why people are scared to do inner work is because they’re afraid they’ll discover that their intrusive thoughts are true. • The irony of relationship anxiety is that embedded inside the perseverations that you’re with the “wrong” partner is the fear that you’ll have to leave. Why would you worry so much about leaving someone who you “know” is “wrong” for you? • Because deep down, way beneath the fears, you know that your partner not only isn’t wrong for you but is very, very right for you. And by “right” I mean that you feel safe, supported, and loved. • And you know, when you’re seeing through clear-eyes instead of fear-eyes, that this is someone with whom you can learn about love. • But fear tells you otherwise. And if you don’t understand how fear works, you’ll grab hold of those dangling vines, which quickly lead you down the rabbit hole of despair. • We know many things about fear. • We know that it is designed to try to keep you safe from the risk of loving, which includes the risk of being vulnerable and the risk of loss. • We know that fear can feel very much like “gut” or “intuition”, and that when it comes to relationship anxiety, the million-dollar question is, “How do I know that this isn’t my gut telling me that I’m in the wrong relationship?” • We know that fear can sound very convincing, but that underneath every intrusive thought that your partner isn’t enough is the fear that you’re not enough. • We know that the more power you give fear, the bigger it gets. • Conversely, we know that the strongest way to reduce fear’s power is to take action.
