If incline bench pressing on a Smith machine feels awkward and you find that the bar is just aiming for your neck on the way down, well, it could be that you’re facing the wrong direction If the Smith machine is slightly slanted, ideally you want to be facing the direction go against the slant. This means that the further the bar moves away from you as you press it, the closer the bar will be moving towards your head. On the other hand as the bar moves down and reaches your chest, the lower it should be landing towards your sternum. It should not be the other way around, where as you press up the bar moves further away from you lower towards your sternum, and as you bring the bar down it gets higher towards your neck. This also matches the ideal bar path on a free weight incline barbell bench press. That was oddly more difficult to explain than it needed to be but anyone who has pressed the wrong way on a Smith machine will understand.
