Consonant + le (C-le) syllables • 🧩 Always come at the end of a word • 🧩 Always end with the letters -le How to divide? When a word ends in -le and has a consonant right before it, split the word just before that consonant. 👉 Example: tur/tle, pur/ple, bub/ble, lit/tle, gig/gle Open vs. Closed before -le • If the first syllable ends with a vowel, it’s “open” and the vowel makes its long sound. 👉 Example: ta/ble, ca/ble, ea/gle, ma/ple • If the first syllable ends with a consonant, it’s “closed” and the vowel makes its short sound. 👉 Example: puz/zle, han/dle, muf/fle, can/dle Special note If the word has -ck before -le, keep them together. 👉 Example: freck/le, pick/le, crack/le ✨ And just like most things in English, there can be exceptions. Try writing C-le words on tape, sticking them on LEGOs, and letting your child “build” and break apart words!
