Calling for Support ≠ Failure — It’s Collaboration. When a student with an IEP is struggling with behavior, it’s imperative that classroom teachers call for support. That call isn’t a sign of weakness — it’s a sign of professional strength, understanding, and care. But here’s the other side: when support staff arrive, we must tread with intention. It’s just as important that we don’t stigmatize the student or treat the moment like “they’re here for me.” Every move, every glance, every tone sends a message — to the student, to their peers, and to the classroom community. That balance — between stepping in with support and maintaining the student’s dignity — is one of the hardest parts of inclusive education. But it’s also one of the most important. Because when we get it right, students feel seen, supported, and safe — not singled out. This is what real inclusion looks like: collaboration, compassion, and consistency. #InclusionMatters #InclusiveEducation #SpecialEducation #GenEdCollaboration #BehaviorSupport #TeamworkInEducation #CallForSupport #PositiveBehaviorSupport #LeastRestrictiveEnvironment #MeaningfulInclusion #TraumaInformedTeaching #BehaviorIntervention #RestorativePractices #PBIS #StudentCentered #DignityFirst #EquityInEducation #IEPGoals #InclusiveClassroom #EducationForAll #TeacherSupport #CollaborationOverIsolation #SupportNotStigma #WholeChildApproach #BehaviorIsCommunication #UniversalDesignForLearning #CoTeaching #SELInSchools #SPEDTeachers #EducationAdvocate

A lot of challenging behavior comes from one thing:
Kids don’t actually understand the connection between their choices and what happens next. Here’s how I talk about it in a way that feels respectful and supportive: I start by introducing choices and consequences using neutral language. This might sound like this:
“Every choice leads to a consequence—some help us, some don’t.” Then I use real classroom examples of choices and consequences with my students. Usually we will co-create a chart together with one side labeled “Our Choices” and one side labeled “Our Consequences”. Here’s some examples: * Standing quietly in line → Gets to go to recess quickly * Ignoring directions to clean up → Takes longer to join centers * Sharing materials → Friend is happy and plays well with you * Hitting or grabbing → Needs to take a pause, and sit with Ms. Zarovska for a short reflection Then I let students PRACTICE making choices. Here’s what that usually looks like: * Role-play “helpful vs. unhelpful choices” scenarios * Discuss what happens after each choice * Ask: “What could happen if…?” “How would that feel?”
You don’t need more warnings or punishments—just clearer teaching, modeling, and discussion. 🤝 👇 If you want done-for-you lessons + printables to help with this, be sure to download my free Big 5 Behavior Bootcamp! ✨ Teacher overwhelm is not a personal flaw. It’s a signal that the system around them needs adjusting. Schools thrive when leadership sees wellbeing as part of instructional quality, not separate from it. Here’s the part we often forget: A regulated teacher can implement feedback, innovate, collaborate and problem-solve. A dysregulated teacher can only survive the day. That’s why effective school leadership isn’t about adding strategies. It’s about removing friction. 🌱 What actually helps: 🧘‍♀️ Emotional space before academic expectations. A teacher who has decompressed can access clarity, judgment and planning skills. 🗂️ Simplified priorities. When leaders narrow the focus, teachers reclaim cognitive bandwidth, which directly improves classroom decision-making. 📈 Skill-building paired with stability. Training works only when the nervous system is calm enough to absorb it. This is how strong school cultures are built, not through pressure, but through capacity. Not through urgency, but through alignment. Not through more work, but through better systems. Because when leaders protect the wellbeing of teachers, they protect the learning of children. 💬 School leaders, what’s one system you’ve created that supports your teachers meaningfully? Here it is👇 ✨ “If we want adults to learn at high levels, it has to be safe. However, it doesn’t have to be comfortable.” Technically that was two sentences 😂 …but wow, this one really stuck with me. ▫️In my early coaching days, I focused on the teachers who were excited, open, and ready to try something new. I didn’t want to “push” the ones who were overwhelmed or unsure. ▫️But here’s what I’ve learned: Change requires safety, but it also requires discomfort. My goal isn’t to avoid that discomfort, it’s to recognize it as a sign that growth is happening. ▫️I’m learning to be present in that space with teachers, to really see them. To stand beside them in the messy middle. Because that’s where real change happens. 💪 If you’re a new (or experienced) coach looking for resources to make your life easier, comment ✨COACH✨ to grab my growing coaching bundle. #InstructionalCoaching #CoachingMindset #TeacherLeadership #LiteracyCoach #InstructionalCoach #TeacherPD #CoachingTips #TeacherSupport #TeacherGrowth #scienceofreading

I still have trauma from the few toxic admin I had in my life! Here’s what I wish I could have said: ❌Stop making teachers feel like a burden when they ask questions. That’s literally part of your job. ❌Saying “my team” instead of “our team” is all we need to know about your leadership style. ❌There’s a difference between being a boss and being a leader. You chose boss. ❌Good teachers shouldn’t intimidate you. They should inspire you. If you’re threatened by teacher success, you’re in the wrong role. ❌Data is important, but so is context. Kids aren’t numbers. Teachers aren’t robots. ❌When you build class rosters, think about balance. Don’t stack one teacher’s class with all the highest needs, whether it’s students with behavior challenges, students learning English, or students who need extra academic support. That’s not leadership, that’s setting people up to fail. ❌Don’t create a culture where teachers feel like they have to “do what’s best for their paycheck” instead of what’s best for students because they’re scared of you. (My teammate literally said this to me.) ❌Intervention isn’t just logging kids onto computer programs. It’s actual teaching. ❌Observing teachers unannounced just to nitpick isn’t support, it’s intimidation. ❌Leadership is about listening, learning, and growing too. You don’t have all the answers. No one does. To the teachers dealing with this right now: Document everything. Protect your peace. And know that how you’re being treated is a reflection of poor leadership, not a reflection of your worth as an educator. You’re not alone. #teacherlife #teacherburnout #teachertruths #toxicadmin #teacherstruggles #teacherproblems #schoolleadership #teacherwellbeing #teachersupport #teachercommunity #edutok #teacherinstagram #teachersofinstagram #teachertrauma

New Series: Classroom Management & the Brain 🧠📚 What if classroom behaviour isn’t just about discipline… but also about what’s happening in a child’s brain? In this new series, we’ll explore how regulation, emotions, and brain development influence behaviour in the classroom. Understanding the why behind behaviour doesn’t excuse it — but it can help us respond more effectively as teachers. Because good classroom management isn’t only about control… it’s about connection, consistency, and knowing what children need in the moment to learn and succeed. If you’ve ever thought, “There has to be a better way to handle this,” this series is for you. #beeingthefoundation #ClassroomManagement #TeacherLife #FoundationPhase #TeacherSupport

💬 Sometimes it feels like people inside the school system don’t even see what special educators go through every single day. We’re asked to do the impossible, and so much of it falls outside of what’s even in our job description. Just a few examples: 🪑 Rearranging an entire classroom mid-year because a student’s wheelchair won’t fit through the setup admin approved. 📝 Writing IEPs at 9pm because the only planning period we had was spent covering another class. 🧸 Managing meltdowns, toileting accidents, and safety plans all before lunch. 🎭 Acting as teacher, counselor, nurse, translator, and crisis manager—sometimes all in the same hour. And while we love our students fiercely, the reality is that special educators burn out faster than almost any other profession. Not because we don’t care—but because we’re constantly asked to carry more than what’s humanly possible. ✨ Here’s the truth: no special educator should feel like they’re on an island, isolated in a school full of amazing people. We all have the power to change that. Stop walking past the classroom that “always has Velcro flying” and start checking in. Offer to share a resource, swap a duty, or simply listen. Because when we see each other, when we support each other, we create schools where every educator can thrive—and our students feel that love, too. #SpecialEducation #SpedTeacherLife #TeacherSupport #WeAreStrongerTogether
