Thinking about doing a triathlon but new to the bike? Here are my 6 tips for beginner triathletes 👇 1️⃣ Get comfortable on your bike before worrying about speed. Focus on balance, cornering, and shifting gears smoothly. The goal early on is confidence — not watts or pace. (Those will come later in training!!) 2️⃣ Practice clipping in and out somewhere safe. A grassy field or empty parking lot is perfect. Everyone tips over at least once — it is a cyclist initiation 🙈🫣😂 #iykyk better to get it out of the way while practicing. 3️⃣ Don’t skip brick workouts. That first run off the bike feels like jelly legs! Start small — even a 5–10 minute run after a ride helps train your body to transition smoothly. 4️⃣ Invest in padded shorts or a good saddle. Comfort = consistency. Use padded shorts for training in the beginning, but also keep in mind to practice some rides without them — most tri suits don’t have thick padding, so it’s smart to get your body used to what race day will feel like. 5️⃣ Learn to fuel while riding. Practice eating and drinking on the bike just like you will on race day. Stay ahead on hydration and nutrition so you don’t bonk on the run. 6️⃣ plan your routes to set yourself up for success!! Train your mindset, not just your muscles. To have to stop and look at phone for maps can become distracting and dangerous, plan ahead and familiarize yourself with the route. Some rides will feel amazing and others will test you — but showing up anyway builds the grit you’ll need on race day. 💪 Every pro started as a beginner. Keep showing up, keep pedaling, and trust the process. #TriathlonTraining #BeginnerTriathlete #BikeTips #IronmanJourney #TriLife #WomenWhoTri #beginnercyclist #momswhocycle

6 things I’ve learned about Ironman training👇 1. This sport is addicting. The tri bug is real. Once you start, it’s hard to stop. You will find yourself on the Ironman website after your race already planning out the next one. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with this, there’s worse activities you could be doing! 2. You’ll always be hungry Food stands no chance. You’ll be burning a ton of calories which makes nutrition crucial. Your body is an engine, food is the fuel! 3. Doing laundry will be your best friend Sweat, sweat, and more sweat. Most times I train at least 2x a day which just means you either need a bunch of clothes or you’ll be frequently doing the laundry. 4. You’ll be tested like never before Your priorities and dedication will change for the better. Early morning workouts. Healthy lifestyle changes. New challenges, new you. 5. It’s not just physical — it’s emotional Some days you feel unstoppable, other days the smallest workout can break you. You’re out there for 3, 4, 5+ hours most weekends, Ironman training will make you go to a dark place.. in a good way. 6. The finish line isn’t the best part It’s the person who you became in the process. Sure, that red carpet finish line and 4 magic works of “You are an Ironman” will be great, but it’s realizing that you did what you said you were going to do and showed up for yourself. 📲I’ve coached 100+ individuals from beginners to podium finishers. Five bike workouts total.
A 46-watt jump in three weeks. So no, this didn’t come from riding more. The last few weeks were run-heavy. A lot of aerobic volume. A lot of steady work. A lot of time building the engine, just not on the bike.
That’s the part most people miss. FTP is basically the highest power you can hold while your heart, blood volume, lungs, and muscles can still deliver and use oxygen fast enough.
Running stresses that system more than cycling. When you run, more muscle mass is involved. Ground impact and arm swing push heart rate up faster, which increases oxygen demand. To handle that stress, the body adapts in a few key ways: - Plasma volume increases. More blood volume means more oxygen delivered per minute. On the bike, that lets you hold higher watts before heart rate drifts and fatigue builds.
 - Stroke volume improves. The heart pumps more blood per beat, lowering the cardiovascular cost of riding at threshold. That’s exactly what FTP reflects.
 - Muscles get better at using oxygen. Running increases capillary density and mitochondrial efficiency, improving lactate clearance and fatigue resistance when you get back on the bike. Put simply:
If your heart can deliver more oxygen, and your muscles can use it more efficiently, you can produce more steady power on the bike. That’s why FTP can rise even when bike volume is low, as long as the aerobic load stays high. This isn’t an argument to stop riding. Specificity still matters. Skill still matters. Durability still matters. But endurance isn’t locked to one sport.
Train the system, and performance follows. #ironmantraining #triathlontraining #ironman #cycling
