🫶 Also, you’re welcome for this view today. If you can’t see your uvula or any space for air to pass through back there, it seems obvious, BUT yes you’re more likely to have obstruction when you sleep. Poor airflow = poor quality sleep…. A few red flags for sleep-disordered breathing: 🚩Chronic fatigue despite “sleeping” 🚩 Snoring (but not always) 🚩heartburn/acid reflux 🚩 anxiety/depression 🚩trouble focusing or remembering things 🚩TMJ issues 🚩tooth clenching/grinding 🚩high blood pressure 🚩 morning headaches And others 🙈 As always, seek a medical provider for individual care and diagnosis!! #myofunctionaltherapy #tongueposture #tonguetieprofessionals #tonguetied #myotherapy #tmjtreatment #tmjpain #tmjproblems #tmjdisorder #jawpain #sleepdisorderedbreathing #sleepdentist #airwaydentistry #airwaydentist #breathebetter #nasalbreathing #sleepapnea #sleepapneaawareness #sleepapneatreatment #uars #uvula #sleepbetterlivebetter

Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) affects many people and you may not even realize it! Anyone can have UARS, but many people who have it are women with normal BMI. Signs and symptoms include 💤 Snoring (but you can have UARS with NO snoring) 🥱 Daytime exhaustion - generally feeling tired during the day 😴 Not feeling rested - even after adequate hours of sleep! 😞 Depression 🛏️ Nighttime wake-ups - you shouldn’t be waking to pee 👃 Difficulty breathing 🫤 Lower quality of life I had many of these symptoms before starting my airway journey. I don’t think any of my providers would have thought to check for sleep disordered breathing/sleep apnea without me learning about it myself and asking questions. As women, we often downplay our symptoms and say things are fine. Here’s your permission to say things are not! You shouldn’t be tired and depressed. If you think you have UARS, a myofunctional therapist is a great place to start to get to the right providers to help you. Do you experience these symptoms? 🩵 2018…After over a year of 6+ different kinds of doctor visits culminating in a trip to the EMERGENCY room to help me sort through why I was exhausted, lightheaded, anxious, and struggling to breathe… (And being told it was stress, and maybe I was having a pulmonary embolism, and maybe it was a panic attack - HELLO I’m stressed bc I can’t breathe.) Fast forward a month or two. I happened to take a sleep test as part of a course (shout out to @erinelliottdds and @3d_dentists 🫶🥹). I signed up under the “don’t have a problem” group… The next day when we were learning to understand the data from home sleep tests I had a MASSIVE 💡 moment. Could this be it? Could this ACTUALLY be the reason I have been struggling for so long? I was stopping and struggling to breathe ALL night long. My sleep was being disturbed and fragmented about 10x/hour from my breathing. WHAT the what!? Ok…if your sleep is constantly fragmented, naturally you are NOT able to get deep rest, and you spend your night in sympathetic/fight or flight mode. This means you are naturally going to wake up anxious, your body has literally been fighting all night long. Sooo it makes sense then that you are going to be EXHAUSTED despite “sleeping.” This was such an easy test to do. Non-invasive. (I’ve also now learned how much home sleep tests actually UNDER estimate breathing issues if anything). I was SHOCKED, relieved to find a possible answer, and also just SUPER frustrated. 😩 😭 How had NO doctor or provider listened to my symptoms and recommended this!?! ‼️ My symptoms were THE red flags for sleep related breathing disorders, specifically UARS (upper airway resistance syndrome). Awareness. Or I should say lack of. I don’t fit the stereotype of what is taught - larger body type, male, older. 🩵 Did I march into my pulmonologist with results for him to read and beg him help me understand/verify that this was a real thing? Did I take more tests!? Sure did. 🩵 Did he then ask me to learn more about this so I could help others once he realized I was a dentist staring down airways all day? Sure did. Continued in comments…

AHI vs RDI (why this matters): * AHI = counts apneas/hypopneas per hour. Often needs big oxygen drops to “count.” * RDI = AHI + RERAs (the “almost-apneas” that still wake your brain). Captures flow limitation and sleep fragmentation. * UARS = high RDI with normal/low AHI. Common in women, especially perimenopause. Big symptoms, “normal” AHI. The system is messed up: * Insurance often ties coverage to AHI thresholds, ignoring RDI/UARS. * Women’s symptoms get dismissed when AHI looks “fine.” * Delayed care costs more: health, time off work, and $$$. What to ask for: * A sleep study that reports RDI/RERAs and flow limitation, not just AHI and SpO2. * A clinician who treats symptoms + RDI, not AHI alone. * Options beyond CPAP MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY!
If your AHI was “normal” but you’re exhausted, advocate for RDI. Treat sooner, not later. The more you know 💫 🌈 #womenshealth #sleep

Think You Sleep Well? Your Doctor—Especially Your Dentist—Might Know Otherwise! You might sleep deeply and feel like you’re getting enough rest, but what if your airway is collapsing at night without you realizing it? Signs You Need a Sleep Study: ✅ Snoring—yes, even if you “sleep well” ✅ Teeth grinding (bruxism) or TMJ pain ✅ Chronic nasal congestion or mouth breathing ✅ High blood pressure or metabolic issues ✅ Waking up unrefreshed or needing caffeine to function Your doctor, especially your dentist, may have noticed wear on your teeth, a small airway, or high arched palate—all signs of sleep-disordered breathing. We use Peripheral Arterial Tone (PAT) technology for more accurate sleep studies, detecting not just severe sleep apnea, but also Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS)—a condition where subtle breathing disturbances disrupt your sleep without major oxygen drops. Even if you think you sleep fine, a sleep study could uncover hidden issues affecting your energy, focus, and long-term health. Don’t ignore the signs! I’m Dr. Soroush Zaghi, your go-to expert for sleep, breathing, and airway health. Follow for more on how to breathe better and sleep better—with a natural-minded, holistic, and functional approach! #SleepApnea #SnoringSolutions #UARS #BetterSleep #BreatheBetter #AirwayHealth #FunctionalMedicine

@thriving.foundations.pt
Upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) is a type of sleep-related breathing disorder similar to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but less severe, which is why it often goes undiagnosed or attributed to other conditions or lifestyle factors. ⭐️ UARS is MORE COMMON IN PRE- and PERIMENOPAUSAL WOMEN than in men or postmenopausal women, but can happen in children and doesn’t discriminate by age, gender or body type. People with UARS have narrow airways and other anatomical differences that make breathing during sleep more difficult. ⭐️ Pregnancy can increase a woman’s risk of developing UARS due to hormonal changes, weight gain, and growing uterus, which puts pressure on the diaphragm, can narrow the airways and crease breathing effort during sleep. ⭐️ Common symptoms of UARS include: • headaches • insomnia (difficulty falling/staying asleep) • snoring • irritability • complaints of overall daytime fatigue • not feeling rested even after enough hours of sleep • depression • frequent awakenings for no reason • brain fog • difficult concentrating • nasal congestion • hypothyroidism • GERD • night sweats • restless sleep • low blood pressure • poor memory • overall diminished quality of life as a result of fragmented or poor sleep (This list is not exhaustive and you don’t need to have all of them to have UARS) These symptoms overlap with so many conditions and are often multifaceted, but considering the many long term negative effects UARS and OSA have on health and maternal and fetal outcomes (more on that later), getting a sleep study to rule this out as a possible cause would be at the top of my list. Does this sound like you? If it does, I promise you’re not alone.

Your sleep study says “no Obstructive Sleep Apnea”… so why are you still exhausted, foggy, and waking up unrefreshed? Because snoring isn’t harmless—it’s often a sign of Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS). UARS flies under the radar. No dramatic oxygen drops. No obvious apneas. But your airway is still struggling—causing repeated micro-arousals all night long. Translation: your brain never gets deep, restorative sleep. And the consequences? Chronic fatigue. Brain fog. Anxiety. Poor focus. Over time—even increased risk of cardiovascular strain and nervous system dysregulation. A “normal” sleep study doesn’t always mean normal sleep. If you’re snoring and still feel awful—there’s a reason. Snoring is a symptom. Not a personality trait. #snoring #sleepdisorder #sleephealth #breathebetter
