The Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965 this week. It was a slap in the face to the countless activists who fought for the VRA — and those who died for it. But we cannot give up. Here’s how we should respond.

I’m at the Louisiana State Capitol calling on our communities from all across Louisiana to pack the Senate & Governmental Affairs Committee this Friday at 9am. They are trying to redraw our congressional maps and eliminate Black representation in Louisiana. One-third of six is still TWO. We will not be silenced. Show up. Testify. Be heard. #LaLege #VRA #VotingRights

Let’s be clear: when the Voting Rights Act gets gutted, it’s not some abstract legal debate—it’s people losing real protection at the ballot box. For decades, the VRA was one of the strongest tools to stop racial discrimination in voting. It kept states with a history of suppression from changing voting laws without oversight. But decisions by the Supreme Court of the United States—especially cases like Shelby County v. Holder and more recent rulings—have chipped away at those protections. What does that mean in real life? More voter ID laws, fewer polling places in certain communities, aggressive voter roll purges—barriers that disproportionately impact Black voters and other marginalized groups. So when people say “it’s not a big deal,” what they’re really saying is they’re comfortable ignoring how access to democracy is being restricted. Silence and denial don’t make it less serious—they just make it easier for it to keep happening. #VotingRights #VRA #Democracy #CivilRights #StayInformed

“I do not care about what’s happening in Texas and I do not care what’s happening in California. What I care about is what’s happening here in North Carolina.” All over the country, states have rushed to drastically gerrymander maps in a mid-decade effort to suppress the will of the people. #votingrightsact #vra #midterms

In a 6-3 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court kneecapped the Voting Rights Act (VRA), the landmark civil rights law that restricted racial gerrymandering and racial discrimination in voting for sixty years in Callais v. Louisiana. * What does that mean? Black and brown communities are no longer safe from state governments stealing power. In states like NC, our population is relatively 50/50 along party lines. However, our state legislature is majority republican due to heavy gerrymandering. Prior to the US Supreme Court’s decision, this was only legal when it was not based on race under the Voting Rights Act. This provision is no longer in place. * So, our parents and grandparents had more voting protections than we do. We are going back in time. I know we’re all tired of hearing “Go Vote,” but these are the repercussions. The power grab will continue and no one in the 99% will benefit. How are you getting involved? Let us know in the comments. * Source: https://www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/scotus-smothers-voting-rights-act-greenlighting-racial-discrimination-and-a-rash-of-gop-gerrymanders/?utm_campaign=14390844-News&utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-9C7hklvpozcE6GEQlqT0LA8IYoqfDgRST541M0Swo9OxzDFQoh7QZUgtyMlVW6nnCPQD3F5v7VGpFu8MStwZVj2M9ba9bFPng7U9lcVwHri5uR3HY&_hsmi=416368433&utm_content=416368433&utm_source=hs_email

***UPDATE: S&GA MEETING THIS EVENING, TUESDAY, 5ish.*** The Senate and Governmental Committee will likely vote on Congressional maps this Wednesday May 13. Supposedly more than one map will make its way through the process. Theoretically if these bills move at the warp speed as this has in other states, we could have a vote in the House early next week. My best guess however is the earliest a House vote would happen is week after next, or perhaps we might go into a special session after we end regular session on June 1. I do not sense there is a desire among legislators to move quickly, but there are many factors at play here. #lalege #VRA #redistricting

This week SCOTUS gutted the Voting Right Act with their ruling in Louisiana vs. Callais. They didn’t limit it, they GUTTED it. Section 2 of the VRA, which outlaws discrimination in voting map creation on the basis of race, demands that we, rightfully, use race-conscious data when redistricting voting maps, and if racial discrimination is found, that map is deemed illegal. That has now been overturned, meaning the court (6-3) has decided that legislatures and states do not need to take race into consideration when drawing voting maps. That is……insane :) That is the darkest of dark decisions for our county as it pertains to civil rights. This court has handed Trump and the republicans yet ANOTHER tool to completely disenfranchise Black and Latino voters in the south in particular, and we will see the ripple effects of this as soon as the midterms. A horrifying reminder that this country is build on an ever-pervasive foundation of white supremacy that is being upheld by a handful of racist individuals. Democrats need to be absolutely ruthless in their response. The door has been burned to the ground, and I don’t want to see a single strongly worded letter about how unfair it is that the door was unlocked in the first place. Gerrymander California ENTIRELY blue. Turn every purple state blue. Lock down every blue state. Float the idea of secession. The chessboard has been thrown out and we must keep the lost disenfranchised among us from being thrown out with it. F*ck Mitch McConnell for blocking Obama from appointing a judge. F*ck Sam Alito and his “good faith” actions. May the ghosts of the people born before the Voting Rights Act was put in place and who will die with it overturned dance on your graves. ✌🏼
