Strategic, not expensive. My clients optimise their nutrition on normal budgets. Because it’s not about money. It’s about knowledge. If you know your MTHFR status, you buy methylated B vitamins, not standard folic acid. If you know your GSTP1/GSTM1 genes, you avoid processed foods with inflammatory additives. Nutrition trends are fascinating to watch. One minute vegetables are “too expensive”. The next we’re spending £30 on a greens powder that contains less than a portion of veg. Most greens powders contain very small amounts of dried vegetables, often much less than you’d get in a normal serving of spinach, broccoli or peas. We don’t know if greens powders have a benefit over the real thing. Yes they can sometimes contain other ingredients but they’re often proprietary blends with unknown amounts said ingredients. Often too little to shift the needle at all. If you like them, enjoy them. But know that beyond drinking an extra glass of fluid, it might not be changing much under the hood. It’s money you could spend on the real thing. Which would be my preference as a dietitian. A bag of frozen veg will give you more fibre, more volume, and at a fraction of the price. Nutrition advice can feel confusing, but the fundamentals are actually quite straightforward. One of the most helpful starting points is to reduce highly processed and ultra-processed foods. These foods are often designed for convenience and shelf life rather than #nourishment. They frequently contain additives and combinations of ingredients that make them easy to overconsume while providing relatively little nutritional value. Instead, focus on foods that genuinely nourish the body. Aim to include plenty of vegetables and whole foods each day. These provide fibre, vitamins and nutrients that support #guthealth and overall wellbeing. Make sure you are getting adequate #protein. Protein helps maintain muscle mass, supports metabolism and contributes to long-term physical function. Healthy fats also play an important role. They help regulate appetite and support a balanced and sustainable way of eating. When you prioritise real food and reduce highly #processedfoods, #nutrition becomes much simpler and far more supportive of long-term health.
