VLWorldbuilding gives you the map. Lore makes you obsessed with what’s off the map.
Your readers don’t want to be lectured with data. They want discovery. Mystery. Whispers. Rumors. Tension. Things they feel but don’t fully understand. That’s lore.
World-building = shown
Lore = hidden
🥶 Think Iceberg Theory:
10% above water.
90% lurking beneath.
Instead of info-dumps, only reveal what progresses, stings, deepens, or twists the plot. Write all of that in dialogues, thoughts, what character notices.
🔥 Every time you explain too much, a reader skips a paragraph. Curiosity dies when everything is spelled out. Feed them lore breadcrumbs and let them beg for more.
🔥 Make the world matter to the MC.
Don’t describe a kingdom unless your MC will save it, burn it, or is captured by it. No one cares about ancient treaties, unless it’ll get your MC killed.
🔥 Don’t have your characters lecture like tour guides.
Have them argue about a law. Curse an old god. Discuss an event. That’s how you inject lore with life.
🔥 Your MC’s POV is biased. USE IT!
Their beliefs and fears should warp the world they describe. Lore is what feels real to the people living in it. And stop writing for a wiki. Start writing for obsession. If your world only works when fully explained - rewrite it.
🔥 Lore makes your world feel ancient, layered, alive.
It hints at secrets. It teases danger. It whispers: you don’t know the whole story yet. And THAT is what keeps readers turning pages.
🤔 You still want to build a massive world?!
Cool. But hide it. Weave it. Let it leak out in scars, jokes, opinions, food, holidays, ruins, news, banter and regrets. Sprinkle it throughout the book, don’t drop the whole
bag on the readers head.

JADon’t overdo your worldbuilding. Readers only need to see the storefront, not the whole city. A few vivid details—like statues missing their left hands—let them believe there’s a thousand years of history behind it. Build deep if you love it, but you don’t have to. The story is what matters.
