Explainedℹ️👇 Most people mess this up. They think all rope ab pull downs are the same. They grab the rope, move up and down, feel a little burn… and assume they trained their core properly. But the range of motion changes everything. When you do the short version, around 30 to 50 percent range, it’s more like a controlled crunch. You keep constant tension. You control the momentum. You keep the burn going without swinging your hips or overloading your lower back. This is perfect for beginners. It’s also smarter if you have lower back pain, weakness, or soreness. You build strength safely. You earn the right to progress. Now the full range version is different. That’s more like a sit up with a cable. You move through 100 percent range. More stretch. More contraction. More overall abdominal engagement. But only if your core and lower back can handle it. As a coach, I don’t just give exercises. I give the right version for the right person at the right time. Because the goal is not to look intense. The goal is to get results and stay injury free. My current ab and core routine: 🟢 Standing weighted crunches in lat-pulldown (abs) 🟢 Compression pike lifts (abs) 🟢 Side bends in GHD (obliques) 🟢 Ab-rollouts (TVA) 🟢 Anti-rotation planks (TVA) This is what I’ve been doing the last couple months, but looks different from a couple years ago, but my abs are still very similar. It doesn’t matter as much the specific exercises, but to do the types of movements and going heavy. All this will help build and strengthen the abs and core, however it will NOT get you visible abs faster, that comes from being at a low enough body fat percentage = changing your nutrition. If your goal is towards visible abs, then you’ll get better results by taking the 30 minutes that this workout takes and instead spend that time meal prepping high protein, low calorie meals and snacks.

Got to keep in mind when you’re doing the ab crunches on a lat pull down, you’ll be getting a more shortened resistance profile. It’s not exactly a direct alternative to doing it the traditional way, which would be more lengthened focused but regardless. Doing it on the lat pulldown could be easier to learn.

DO YOU DO YOUR LAT PULLDOWNS CORRECTLY? 👀🤔 One of the biggest mistakes I see during lat pulldowns as a personal trainer is people not setting their position correctly prior to starting their set. This often leads to them using their biceps more to lift the weight, rather than placing the emphasis on their lats. To fix this, it’s important to get into position by pulling your shoulder blades down and lifting your chest up. This is known as scapula depression and corrects posture and helps to isolate the lats. ✅ Two cues I use when instructing this exercise: ‘Increase the distance between your ears to your shoulders’ Or ‘Pull your shoulders down into your back pockets’ I also tell my clients to focus on bringing their chest to the bar/attachment, rather than bringing the bar down to their chest.
