Did you know you can press the screen & hold to pause the reel? I’ve met 2 people recently that didn’t know that so figured I’d share bc this video moves fast! Chaturanga is one of the most challenging poses in vinyasa yoga but it’s rarely broken down in a public class setting. It’s important to practice proper alignment (stacking elbows over the wrists) to protect your joints & rotator cuff. This requires a ton of upper body strength & a lot of forward movement as you lower. Most people lower straight down into chaturanga which sends the elbows back, then they hurl themselves into up dog which puts a lot of stress on the rotator cuff. Instead of lowering straight down, move FORWARD as you bend at your elbows, keeping your elbows stacked over your wrists. You want to create a 90 degree angle with your elbows, so elbows are stacked over the wrists & shoulders are in line with the elbow & hips. Try this Chaturanga test to see if your elbows are staying in alignment. Start in a hands & knees position & place blocks (on the tallest level) behind your hands/forearms. Inhale: Roll the eyes of your elbows forward, look forward, keep the neck long & shoulders away from the ears Exhale: Bend your elbows & lower half way. Your shoulders should move FORWARD & not lower below the height of your elbows. If the blocks move, this is giving you feedback that you’re not moving forward enough to keep the elbows stacked as you lower. This might sound easy but it’s SUPER challenging, even for us seasoned yogis! You can practice this on your knees or try it from a plank position. Repeat several times to build strength & muscle memory. If you have any questions or feedback leave them in the comments & save this post for yoga inspo! HOW TO ASTAVAKRASANA - 8 ANGLE POSE I hope you enjoy this tutorial 🙏 Much love Charlie ✨ ⠀ 🌴step-by-step: 1️⃣ Start with a quick warm up. 2️⃣ Rest the back of your knee on the back of your shoulder or upper arm. 3️⃣ Plant your hands and cross your ankles. 4️⃣ Lean forward to shift weight into hands as you lift the hips. 5️⃣ Squeeze legs together and keep your chest level with the ground. ⠀ 💥Tip: Keep leaning weight forward - into your hands to stack your weight over your elbows and wrists. This will make it easier to keep your hips off the ground and stay in the balance. ⠀ 🙏 If you are trying this for the first time go easy on yourself, don’t worry if the pose isn’t ‘perfect’, it will be wobbly… and probably a little messy but that’s okay, it’s all part of the process. ⠀ #yogaonline #yogalovers #yogaathome #yogainstructor #athomeworkout #yogatraining
