Have you ever wondered why you’re not getting apples off your apple tree? This might be the reason why… 🍎❌🌸 Apple trees need a buddy to pollinate! 🐝🌳 Most apple varieties aren’t self-pollinating — they need another variety that blooms at the same time ⏱️ That’s where flowering groups come in: There are 4 flowering groups for apple trees 🍏🌼 Each one blooms at a slightly different time in spring: • Group 1 (Early) ⏰ ‘Gravenstein’, ‘Anna’ 🍏 ✅ Pairs with Group 2 • Group 2 (Early-mid) ☀️ ‘Liberty’, ‘McIntosh’ 🍎 ✅ Pairs with Group 1 or 3 • Group 3 (Mid-late) 🌤 ‘Fuji’, ‘Granny Smith’ 🍯 ✅ Pairs with Group 2 or 4 • Group 4 (Late) 🌅 ‘Gala’, ‘Red Delicious’ 🍏 ✅ Pairs with Group 3 Planting trees in adjacent groups means they’ll bloom together and swap pollen like good neighbors 🐝🌸🌳 There are some apple trees that have sterile pollen (called Triploid) and will not pollenate any other trees. Examples of these are Arkansas Black, Mutsu, Jonagold, Stayman Winesap. 🍏 What other questions do you have about fruit tree pollination? Wrapped up harvest with some exciting results in this Organic Cosmic Crisp® block, especially in the rows treated with Firman Pollen using Smart Apply tech on a LectroBlast sprayer. 🍎 The difference this year was clear: ✔️ Significantly more well-formed, evenly shaped fruit in treated rows ✔️ Control rows still showed misshapen apples from poor pollination ✔️ 350 bins picked this year compared to 280 last year 🙌 Between the targeted Smart Apply coverage, the electrostatic efficiency of LectroBlast, and the pollen viability from Firman, this trio really delivered. Proper pollination isn’t just about yield, it’s about fruit quality, and this trial proved both can go hand-in-hand. Big thanks again to @firmanpollencompany , @smartapplyspraying , @lectroblast,and @papemachinery.ag.turf for helping make this possible. Dad says “we definitely want to do it again next year.” We have never seen a set like this on our Organic Cosmic block. Excited to keep building on these results! #SmartApply #LectroBlast #FirmanPollen #Pape #CosmicCrisp #AppleFarming #PrecisionAg #Pollination #AppleGirl #WhereFoodComesFrom #Farming

I Grew An Apple Orchard In My Backyard 🍎 I always wondered if it was easy to grow an apple orchard, so I made it happen. I spent 2 years turning my backyard into one. But I heard that when you plant apples from seed, not all of them will produce fruit identical to the original apple seed. So you might end up with apples you can’t actually eat. That’s why cutting a piece of the original tree and planting it in the ground is the preferred method of growing apple trees - but I didn’t believe that until I could see it with my own eyes. Well, that’s when the adventure began. 🍎 Facts You’ll Learn In This Video: 1. Peeling the outer layer of skin off of apple seeds will help them germinate at a faster rate than leaving the skin on. 2. Apple seeds have the power to germinate inside of the apple itself. This is a process called “vivipary,” and this happens because the seeds inside the apple are surrounded by flesh, which provides them with moisture and nutrients to develop and grow. 3. You can prompt vivpary to take place by leaving the apple out in a warm and moist environment for 24 hours, then placing it in the fridge for 48 hours. 4. Not all apple seeds will germinate successfully, and even those that do may not produce an apple tree that bears fruit identical to the original apple. This is because apple trees are often cross-pollinated, meaning the seeds may contain genetic material from other apple trees in the area. 5. There are pink-fleshed apples that exist. They are called ‘rose apples,” and they taste like strawberry lemonade. They are less acidic than regular apples. An Oregon farmer discovered the pink flesh after taking a bite out of one of the apples on his trees in the 60s, but it didn’t start to become commercially available until a few years ago! 6. Ginkgo Trees are not in fact crab apples, but a tree that produces a nut! It’s one of the oldest tree species on earth and is often referred to as the ‘living fossil’ because it has remained relatively unchanged for millions of years. FULL VID ON YOUTUBE🍎 #howtowithjessie
