When a child experiences challenging behavior in therapy, a good therapist will respond with empathy, validate the child’s feelings, and maintain a calm and objective demeanor. They may use techniques like active listening, positive language, and de-escalation strategies to address the situation. Here’s our therapist meeting the child where he is. She is calm, validating his needs and giving him time to express himself. When a child experiences challenging behavior in therapy, a good therapist will respond with empathy. Here’s a more detailed look at how a good therapist might respond: Empathy and Validation Calm and Objective Communication Redirect the child’s attention to the activity they are working on when the time is right ! There are so many ways to help a young child dealing with stress or trauma. Getting down, leaning in, just as our therapist is doing looking into their eyes, and being deeply attuned can be the gentle touch that they need. Independence is built through intentional, structured support.✨ In ABA, we use a prompt hierarchy to guide learning—starting with the level of support each child needs, then gradually fading prompts over time to promote independent responding. Each step is purposeful, helping skills transfer beyond guided sessions. Because meaningful progress means responding with confidence—on their own. . . . . . #ABAtherapy #instareel #autismsupport

Find an ABA provide that cares 🫶 Old ABA focused heavily on compliance, rigid protocols, and high-intensity hours, often without considering the individual’s autonomy. New ABA prioritizes a more compassionate, client-centered approach—emphasizing autonomy, assent, naturalistic teaching, and fading services to build true independence. So many interventions that use ABA methods are disguised these days. I’ve been caught out too! Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. The emphasis on routine can limit a child’s ability to adapt to new or unexpected situations out in the real world. Overemphasis on Compliance: ABA therapy has been criticised for its focus on compliance and “normalizing” behavior, which can undermine the child’s individuality and discourage self-expression. What to look out for… 🚩 a lack of individualized plans 🚩 overly rigid 🚩 punitive techniques 🚩 a focus solely on behavior control without addressing underlying needs 🚩 the aim to mask behaviours to conform or appear more neurotypical What to look for instead… ✅ emphasis on communication and social skills linked to the child’s wants and needs ✅ ongoing assessment and adaptation of individualised plans ✅ a caring and compassionate approach centred around the individual and their desires and needs ✅ focus on trust and relationship building ✅ child-centered focus ✅ Autism or neurodivergence affirming There is lots of talk about long standing and recommended methods such as TEACCH system and PECS and Attention Autism. All three i use to some degree in my classroom. I am constantly researching autism affirming approaches and speaking to autistic adults to learn and do the best I can by my learners. My method is to not be afraid to make adaptations, if something feels like the 🚩 , then change it, adapt it, individualise it, make it child-centered and autism affirming- and if you can’t …. DITCH IT. #specialeducationteacher #abatherapy #autismacceptance #autismmom

This child came to us nonverbal, on the autism spectrum, and highly dependent on the phone. Transitions were hard. Engagement was limited. And most activities felt overwhelming for him. But instead of focusing only on behavior, we focused on his brain. Through intensive therapy, we worked on helping his nervous system feel more organized and supported. Step by step, things started to shift. He began tolerating more. Engaging more. Responding more. Because when the brain starts to process better, everything else can begin to change. Intensive therapy is not just about doing more sessions it’s about targeting the root sensory processing, regulation, and brain body connection. That’s where real progress starts. If this sounds like your child, feel free to message us and we’ll guide you on the next steps 🤍 Autism therapy for nonverbal child | Speech delay autism help | ADHD child behavior | Sensory processing disorder treatment | Occupational therapy for autism | Child emotional regulation therapy | Screen addiction in children | Brain based therapy for kids | Early intervention autism | Intensive therapy for autism #autism #pediatrictherapy #intensivetherapy #brainhealth #kids

Practicing with compassion means demonstrating patience and modeling calmness while treating individuals with respect and dignity. It is important to train clinicians on how to respond proactively to crisis situations in order to ensure safety and supportive environments. Lack of training can create hazardous situations for both clinicians and children, resulting in poor practices. This often contributes to the negative perceptions of the application of Behavior Analysis in children on the Autism Spectrum. Severe behavior can be influenced by many factors beyond the scope of ABA. Therefore, coordinating care with other professionals and adopting a multidisciplinary approach is essential. However, one thing we can control during therapy is our method, ensuring it is rooted in compassion and understanding. 🚨Disclaimer: This video has been shared with the consent of the child’s parent for training purposes. 🚨Disclaimer: This video demonstrates behavior-analytic strategies that incorporate movement and physical guidance to support skill acquisition and engagement. While no stand-alone, evidence-based therapy is universally accepted with consistent reliable outcomes for treating body apraxia, research supports that repetition, reinforcement, and task-specific motor learning can support functional improvement. Behavior analysts are not assessing the direct impact of proprioceptive input or sensory integration, but instead use movement strategically and with intention to facilitate behavioral goals by contriving opportunities within the natural environment. This video is for educational purposes only and is not intended to replace or substitute treatment/clinical judgment or multidisciplinary collaboration. • • • Understanding involuntary movements and being able to embed purposeful movement into your sessions not only helps shape neural pathways that facilitate functional motor skills that can compete with problem behavior (i.e., elopement), but it also ensures that our approach is rooted in compassion and not forced compliance via escape extinction. Try to understand the behavior before attempting to change it 👊🏼 #myBehaviorNetwork🌎 -A new day in ABA Be part of something special October 2025 🦾 #autism #behavioranalysis #aba #bcba #therapist #abatherapy #asd #psicologia #movimiento #terapia #multidisciplinary #psychology #movement #motorskills #neuroscience #OT #autismparents Hebb, D. What no one tells you about starting ABA therapy as a parent 👇 You walk in hoping for progress, but also carrying questions, nerves, and a quiet hope that this will truly help your child. 💛 No one tells you how emotional it can feel at the beginning. You’re learning new terms, meeting new people, and trusting others to be part of your child’s world. You’re trying to stay strong while also wondering if you’re making all the right decisions. No one tells you how much you’ll start noticing the little things. The slightly longer eye contact. The first time they try a new word or skill. The moments that seem small to others but feel like everything to you. No one tells you how involved you’ll be. It’s not just drop-off and pick-up. It’s learning strategies, asking questions, practicing at home, and becoming part of the process every step of the way. And no one tells you that progress isn’t always linear. There are amazing days, tough days, and everything in between. There might be moments of doubt, but there are also moments that remind you exactly why you started. Most importantly, no one tells you that your journey will look different from anyone else’s. And that’s okay. 🌱 Because over time, you start to see it. The growth. The connection. The confidence building little by little. And you realize… the magic was always in the small moments. ✨ #ABATherapy #AutismSupport #ParentPerspective #AutismJourney #Neurodiversity ParentSupport SpecialNeedsParenting ABA TherapyJourney AutismAwareness BehaviorAnalysis SmallWins ProgressNotPerfection AutismCommunity

How do we manage behaviors? I know this video is long but this is the step by step process we used this Sunday! • Remember: all behavior is a form of communications. Behavior is not something to be afraid of! • Step 1: remain calm. Bring your calm into the situation. Step 2: get down on their level. Step 3: be honest with them Step 4: set a visual timer Step 5: offer choices or deep pressure input Step 6: use a first, then statement Step 7: show them a visual schedule Disclaimer: this is what we used Sunday for a specific kiddo. Each kid is going to be different. It’s our job to try and figure out what is best for them. Connect with them and learn.
