SO😁 This is my best flexibility hack ⬇️
Find a Skill that is FUN to learn, that also requires flexibility.
It sounds simple, but is way underrated.
No “force yourself to stretch while watching Netflix”.
Too many adults are trying to ‘willpower’ themselves into shape.
But this destroys long term joy in learning.
This approach is much more rewarding:
Learn SKILLS you find fun!
Skills have a high coordination component.
That means flexibility isn’t the only rate limiter, which is why progress can come way faster.
Bridge walkovers are another example for arching flexibility.
Or arching handstands. Or forward cartwheels.
Once I have a skill I actually enjoy practicing, it makes flexibility training much easier.
Because I’m not just stretching “to be more flexible” (generic, impersonal).
I am stretching “to master a skill I find fun and interesting” (personal, direct impact on what I care about).
Plus, the skill itself will develop some base level of flexibility without needing to hold a stretch for 60 seconds (not so entertaining). 😬
The science tells us that static passive stretching in combination with active contract-relax and in some cases loaded stretching is a faster way to become flexible.
Dismissing these would be silly.
But they are so much easier to do mentally right after skill practice. The body is warm. We know the benefits.
If it hadn’t been for elbow levers, I would not have found joy in arching acrobatics.
They actually require more side bending and shoulder strength, less spinal extension.
A decent way to get started. Although all variations in this video are fairly advanced.
