In English, do we say that we’re angry WITH someone, or angry AT someone? And are we disappointed IN someone or WITH someone? Deciding which preposition to use in the moment can be quite tricky if you’re not sure what sounds natural and what doesn’t, but this is exactly what I explain in today’s video and below! 🔸angry = when talking about a person, we can say that we’re angry AT them or angry WITH them. Angry AT is more common in the U.S., while angry WITH is used more in the UK. When talking about things or situations, however, we say that we’re angry ABOUT them: He does and says stupid things, but I can’t stay angry at/with him for long. If you’re still angry about how things went, you need to talk to someone about it. 🔸mad = in English, we are mad AT someone, not WITH someone. However, you can be mad WITH a certain emotion like rage or jealousy. Just like “angry,” we say that we’re mad ABOUT a thing or situation, but “mad” is much more common in spoken English than “angry”: He’s still mad at me for canceling our plans. 🔸disappointed = we typically say that we’re disappointed IN a person and disappointed WITH a certain thing, and we can also use “by” as well. Being disappointed WITH something means that you’re unsatisfied with it, but being disappointed BY something is the passive voice, so it means that something caused our disappointment: His mom told him that she was disappointed in him for taking the easy way out. I’m happy with all the work and effort I put into it, but I’m disappointed with the result. I was so excited to tell him the news, but I was really disappointed by his reaction. 🔸surprised = we can say that we’re surprised AT or BY something, but surprised BY is more common, and surprised WITH means that someone used something to surprise us: I was really surprised by (or at) how quickly they brought our food to us. He surprised me with flowers. 🔸impressed = we can say that we’re impressed WITH or BY something, and they’re both common and interchangeable: After your performance, the talent scout told me he was very impressed with (or by) you. . . . . . #esl #learnenglish #englishgrammar
