Low back pain doesn’t always originate in the low back. We often focus on the location of the pain and wind up missing the source of the pain in the process. Disc related back pain accounts for just 30% of back pain complaints. Take into consideration that between 80-85% of us will experience back pain in our lives and you realize that something else is often at play here - actually causing the pain. Often times, it’s related to the glute medius (either spasm, weakness or both). This simple hip hiker exercise does a great job of strengthening this muscle without any elaborate equipment or time needed. Have biceps that look good when flexed but skinny when viewed from the front? There’s a reason for that…and it’s not the biceps! You’ve got to stop forgetting to include brachialis targeted exercises every time you train your arms. Here is show you the two best. The traditional hammer curl - but don’t forget to load it up heavier than your typical dumbbell curl and use a little momentum to drive higher tension and overload. This exercise should be a little less pretty and more powerful to make the best gains from it. The second is the cross body hammer curl. Here the idea is to perform your reps much slower and deliberate using lighter weight. The key is the pronation of the forearm and close dragging of the arm across the chest during the movement. The pronation further minimizes the biceps and focuses the work more on the brachialis. The speed of the movement is important here too in order to minimize the shift away from the brachialis to the brachioradialis. It’s the catch phrase that makes fettuccine Alfredo the same as “pasta” in their head as a way to justify the choice. Or a baked potato (with everything), but they’ll just tell you about the potato. That said there’s others who truly don’t know about the hidden calories and sugar they’re consuming along the road to “healthy” food choices. Yogurt? Could be good but then again could be horrible. Oatmeal? Clean morning carbs or again…horrible. If you want to build up the height of the biceps, you’ll want to focus on exercises that more effectively target the long head of the biceps brachii. The easiest way to do this is to choose those movements that involve extension at the shoulder joint and train the biceps in a contracted and lengthened state from here. The drag curl and incline dumbbell curl will work really well for this. Sure, genetics are partly responsible for the shape of any biceps muscle - but pretending that the development of the biceps muscle won’t influence these more particular aspects of its appearance is just not correct. Oh and yes, shortened and lengthened state exercises are both important for not just complete biceps development but for the health of the shoulder joint at the center of your biceps exercises.
