✨A backhanded compliment is a compliment that is subtly disguised as an implied insult. This creates a breeding ground for passive aggression, and a popular tool for covert types to take jabs at you.
People get away with a lot more in the subtleties. It’s difficult to recognize sometimes - in fact you may not at all, but your subconscious might. And over time that may have an effect.
But hey! A reminder that context matters, and to not let backhanded compliments bother you too much.😎 Sometimes they’re intentional, sometimes they’re not…if you think they are, or if you notice someone doing it regularly, then it’s good to be aware and consider boundaries. I’ve called out friends after noticing a clear pattern. I have no problem doing that lol. People who do this generally are non-confrontational, probably insecure, and/or just tactless lol.
