The first and biggest key to getting backspin with your wedges is your equipment.
It’s your groves that grab the golf ball, and create friction. If these are worn or dirty, you’ll really struggle to create backspin.
When it comes to golf balls, you need to be playing a soft golf ball to have any chance of generating serious backspin.
A softer ball allows the grooves to stick and generate backspin.
If you’re using a distance ball, you’ll lose this friction and not generate any spin.
Secondly, you need loft to hit high spinning chip shots.
You can see how much Rory opens the face here, which allows him to make a glancing blow, just like you would hit a slice in tennis.
And finally, you need speed to create backspin.
The faster your club moves through the ball, the more spin you generate
So commit to the shot and create speed through impact.
There’s a lot more that goes into creating backspin around the greens, here’s a few other things you might consider:
If the ball is wet, you won’t see much spin as the ball will slide up the face.

TYThe first You HAVE to play with a premium ball with a soft outer cover to generate maximum spin. I have done the testing - no one in the world can spin a cheap, hard ball!
The second requirement is fresh grooves, meaning that relatively new wedges are needed. The grooves roll of channeling away debris and moisture is maximised, so friction increases.
The firmness and speed of a green also makes a massive difference - often the spiniest wedge shots look this way as the greens are 12/13 on the stimp meter with a moderate firmness.
After the above points are accounted for - it’s technique, enough attack angle, ball first contact and stretching out your spin loft window.

Hitting chip shots on tight lies shows what kind of chipper you really are.
If you thin or chunk chips it’s because you’re not using the bounce correctly.
With a little fluff under the ball you can get away with some chips but you’ll see they won’t spin.
This is the reason. The leading edge is exposed just enough to lift the ball but when it lands it will have top spin.
Open the club face about half way to use the bounce and press your hands forward will give you solid chip shots all day.
