Sound up for a VERY angry little chicken nugget! 🦇 This Big Brown Bat patient came to us with BIG opinions about being held, and understandably so! They had become stranded inside of someone's home, and was a little too skinny and dehydrated to fly off when they were put back outside. After some fluids, a check-up, and some food, this little bat perked right up and was happy to tell us EXACTLY what they thought about being handled by giant humans! DID YOU KNOW? Bats have social calls in addition to echolocation! Bats are famous for their ability to echolocate, allowing them to navigate and hunt for flying insects safely in the darkness. While our human ears aren't able to hear these supersonic-pitched calls, we ARE able to hear their social calls! When bats "talk" to each other, express their displeasure at being handled, or squabble and chatter among themselves in roosting colonies, they are audible to human ears. What word would you use describe this Big Brown's calls? Squeaking? Chattering? Cricketing? #bigbrownbat #bats #ifreakinglovebats #wildliferehabilitation #wildlifeeducation

Bats use ultrasonic waves as a sophisticated form of echolocation, allowing them to "see" with sound in complete darkness. By emitting high-frequency sound pulses—often too high for human ears to detect—they listen for the echoes that bounce off nearby objects. This echo pattern reveals the size, shape, distance, and even texture of obstacles or prey in their environment. With this biological sonar, bats can expertly navigate dense forests, avoid predators, and zero in on tiny flying insects with incredible precision. It’s one of nature’s most advanced navigation systems, honed over millions of years of evolution.

Most people have heard that bats use echolocation to navigate and hunt in the dark, but have you ever watched it in action? 🔊🦇 #BatWeek Bats are talkative, social animals! They chatter and make grumpy noises between themselves in colonies, they chatter at rehabbers when we handle them (what we assume to mean "Stop that, I don't want to be manhandled!"), and they make even more sounds that aren't detectable to human ears! These ultrasonic calls are visually observable in some species when they call, though, as demonstrated by this fuzzy Hoary Bat! He is clearly opening his mouth to make sound, but we can't hear it. While bats have tiny eyes, they can fully explore what their surroundings look like in any lighting. Bats are the only mammals who have evolved full flight, and they're among the few who evolved echolocation, as well. We're so fortunate that we can appreciate such fantastic animals in our own back yards! 😍 #hoarybat #bats #wildlifeeducation #echolocation

Flying fox bats are the largest bats in the world, easily recognised by their fox-like faces and impressive wingspans. Unlike smaller bats that use echolocation, they depend on their sharp eyesight and strong sense of smell to find their way. When gathered in large colonies, they often let out loud, repetitive barking sounds to communicate, defend their territory, or warn others of danger. These barks echo through the trees, filling their roosts with lively chatter. Scientists have successfully cloned giant 7-foot bats in a laboratory, a milestone in genetic engineering and wildlife research. Using advanced CRISPR techniques, reconstructed DNA, and synthetic embryology, researchers produced fully viable bat embryos that were later brought to term in controlled bio-secure environments. The creation of these massive bats has captivated scientists, conservationists, and the public, sparking awe and curiosity about what was once thought biologically impossible. Early observations indicate the bats are healthy, with extraordinary wingspans, enhanced echolocation abilities, and robust flight mechanics, making them unlike any naturally occurring species. Experts stress that strict containment protocols are in place, but the breakthrough raises profound questions about ethics, ecological impact, and the future of cloning large, previously unthinkable animals in the lab. #cloning #giantbats #geneticengineering #sciencebreakthrough #bioethics

🦇 Did you know? Flying foxes aren’t foxes at all—they’re the largest bats in the world, with wingspans up to 5 feet. Despite their size, they’re gentle fruit-eaters and some of nature’s most important pollinators. Big wings. FACES OF THE NIGHT… 🦇 Not all bats are built the same. Some look gentle… others look like something out of a nightmare. Look closer. The fruit bat carries soft eyes and a fox-like face, designed for finding ripe fruit in the dark. The vampire bat has heat sensors on its nose, allowing it to locate blood flow under skin with surgical precision. Then it gets stranger. Horseshoe bats shape sound with their nose like a living radar system. Leaf-nosed bats turn their faces into complex sonar reflectors. Long-eared bats listen to insects moving in complete silence. And then… the hammer-headed bat. A face so exaggerated it looks unreal. That massive structure is used to amplify sound during mating calls, turning the night into a battlefield of echoes.
