Bats and dolphins echolocate to navigate the skies and the seas. It turns out that humans can echolocate, too—and it could change your brain. This study’s 10-week echolocation training program (20 sessions, 2-3 hours each) taught participants how to use click-based echolocation to perform perception, identification, and navigation tasks. Sperm whales use sound to see in the deep ocean—but it’s not just any sound. Their echolocation clicks are among the most intense biological noises ever measured. These bursts help them hunt in complete darkness, map their surroundings, and even stun prey. At close range, the energy in these clicks is so high that it could potentially disrupt or damage human tissue. Not because whales are aggressive—but because evolution pushed their sonar to extreme physical limits. They’re built to hunt in a world without light. We’re not built to be anywhere near that system. Nature doesn’t always need teeth or claws to be powerful. Follow @Stem_Antics for more deep dives into real science behind viral claims. Comment what animal or tech we should break down next. Imagine being able to "see" your surroundings just by clicking your tongue. This incredible video explores the story of Daniel Kish, who has been blind since the age of one. By teaching himself the art of echolocation—the same technique used by bats and dolphins—he is able to navigate the world with stunning accuracy. Through these rhythmic clicks, he can identify the distance, size, and even the shape of objects like buildings and trees. This unique skill even allows him to ride a bicycle through busy areas by listening to how sound waves bounce off his environment. It is a powerful testament to the adaptability of the human brain and the strength of the human spirit. Credit: @zackdfilms #echolocation #science #inspiration #humanbrain #accessibility

Daniel Kish is a visionary who lost his sight but found a way to see the world with sound – through echolocation. Now, the President and founder of World Access for the Blind extends his skills to people with visual impairment, teaching them to use echolocation for enhanced navigation and independence. He has taught this skill to over 500 blind children around the world. #echolocation #navigation #accessibility #blindness #blind #visionimpaired #dolphins

Humans might not need eyes to “see.” In the comics, Daredevil uses radar-like perception to sense the world around him. But something similar already exists in real life. Some blind individuals use human echolocation... they make clicking sounds and interpret the echoes to map their surroundings. Even more fascinating, brain scans show their visual cortex activating, meaning the brain can repurpose vision centers to process sound. But biology hits a hard limit. Sound waves have large wavelengths. At around 1 kHz, the wavelength is roughly 34 cm, which means the spatial resolution is extremely low... worse than the size of a basketball. To detect small details like facial features, humans would need ultrasonic frequencies like bats or dolphins, and our biology simply isn’t built for that level of precision. And pushing it further gets even more dangerous. Imagine if humans had X-ray vision like Superman. X-rays are ionizing radiation. To “see” with them, your body would have to emit radiation, pass it through objects, and detect what scatters back. That means every glance would expose both you and everyone around you to harmful radiation—leading to DNA damage, mutations, and cancer. Sometimes evolution doesn’t choose the coolest ability. It chooses the one that keeps you alive. Daniel Kish may have lost his sight, but he gained a whole new way of seeing through sound. As the President and founder of World Access for the Blind, he’s taught over 500 blind children around the world how to use echolocation to navigate independently and confidently. Have you ever wondered how echolocation works?🔊 Echolocation or biosonar, is a biological process used by certain animals, including the sperm whale, to navigate and locate objects in their environment when vision is ineffective, for example at night or in turbid water. It involves the production of sound and the reception and interpretation, using their brain, of the echoes which return from objects. The term “echolocation” was coined in 1944 by Donald Griffin, to describe how bats orient themselves in darkness, and CETI’s principal advisor Roger Payne was actually a research assistant to Donald while @Harvard University studying bat echolocation before he dedicated his career to the study of whales and their protection. The echolocation systems of bats and toothed whales, like sperm whales, are exquisitely sophisticated and it is an example of convergent evolution, the process by which distantly related organisms evolve similar features or adaptations.🐋🦇 To learn more about the echolocation of sperm whales and bats check out the papers, “Blind as a Bat? Most people have heard that bats use echolocation to navigate and hunt in the dark, but have you ever watched it in action? 🔊🦇 #BatWeek Bats are talkative, social animals! They chatter and make grumpy noises between themselves in colonies, they chatter at rehabbers when we handle them (what we assume to mean "Stop that, I don't want to be manhandled!"), and they make even more sounds that aren't detectable to human ears! These ultrasonic calls are visually observable in some species when they call, though, as demonstrated by this fuzzy Hoary Bat! He is clearly opening his mouth to make sound, but we can't hear it. While bats have tiny eyes, they can fully explore what their surroundings look like in any lighting. Bats are the only mammals who have evolved full flight, and they're among the few who evolved echolocation, as well. We're so fortunate that we can appreciate such fantastic animals in our own back yards! 😍 #hoarybat #bats #wildlifeeducation #echolocation
