It’s the least bittern! Decided to take a rare weekday trip to the wetlands on a work day for about an hour and a half, and this bird alone made it all worth it! I had only seen the least bittern once before and it was too far away to get footage of; but this one made it a point to be front and center for my lens and it completely made my day! This very angry American Bittern was send to us with the help of the hsgniagara. Unfortunately he must have suffered an impact of sorts and ruptured an air sack. Birds have relatively small lungs and to aid them with oxygen exchange they have air sacks in various locations of their body. We have drained the excess air and he’ll be on antibiotics and pain meds until it heals at which point he’ll be able to leave us to continue migration. These bitterns are such cool birds. In their habitat (wetlands) they are so well camouflaged they are almost impossible to spot.

Its usual behaviour involves standing still, waiting patiently to strike at unsuspecting prey like fish, amphibians, and insects with its dagger like beak. 🐟🦗 This footage is rare, as bitterns typically prefer wading through shallow waters rather than swimming. The increase in sightings at Minsmere over the years is a testament to the fantastic conservation work being done, helping the bittern population rebound from near extinction in the UK.
