🌾🐦 The elusive bitterns, secretive herons that thrive in dense reed beds of freshwater marshes. Known for their incredible camouflage, bitterns are master hiders, blending seamlessly into their surroundings to evade predators and silently stalk their prey. Bitterns have a distinctive booming call, which can be heard up to several kilometers away, primarily used during the breeding season to attract mates and declare territory. Despite their quiet nature, this call is one of the loudest bird calls, and it's crucial for their survival in thick habitats where visibility is low. Conservation efforts are vital as many bittern species worldwide face threats from habitat loss and degradation. Protecting wetland habitats not only aids in the survival of these mysterious birds but also supports biodiversity and water purification. 🌍 Want to dive deeper into the secret lives of bitterns and other hidden wildlife gems? Bitterns, the loudest bird in the UK, have made a remarkable 'boom' back from the brink. All thanks to dedicated RSPB-led research and conservation. They were heard 'booming' from 11 new sites in 2023, an amazing step towards the birds recovery across the country. Bitterns can occasionally be spotted moving among the reeds at the water’s edge seeking out fish, insects, and amphibians to eat. Rejuvenating, managing, and creating wetland habitats has been vital to their recent success, including at sites such as RSPB Leighton Moss in Lancashire. The nature reserve, which celebrates its 60 anniversary this year, has heard ten booming males across the reserve so far in 2024, a jump from just six two years ago. This is all down to the long-term rejuvenation of reedbeds and creation of additional habitat. Over half of the UK’s Bittern population can now be found on RSPB reserves! Check out more about this incredible bird and the reserves where you can hear the booms of the Bittern for yourself. https://www.rspb.org.uk/whats-happening/news/conservationists-celebrate-booming-brilliant-year-for-uks-loudest-bird #bittern #conservation #leigthonmoss #birdinguk #wildlifeconservation 📹 Steve Everett Video shows a Bittern standing on the edge of a reedbed and booms three times.

As we come to the end of the year, it's time to remind ourselves of some of the good news from 2024. One such story is that of booming Bitterns. This year saw 2023's data published, showing numbers of this bird, once extinct in the UK, on the rise. The survey recorded 234 male Bitterns booming, a 24% increase from 5 years before! We're proud to say the conservation work of RSPB staff and volunteers has really paid off, with over half the UK's Bitterns now found on our reserves. A massive thank you also goes to other volunteers, landowners, and organisations who have played a role in this tremendous achievement. Here's to more Bitterns! #bitterns #birds #uknatuere #conservation

Ever wondered exactly what an American Bittern sounds like? Take a listen! 👂 You'll likely start hearing these birds in the spring on their breeding grounds at extensive freshwater marshes—their oong-KA-chunk calls may be repeated a few times and can often be heard for half a mile. Photographer @joelsartore captures footage of a least bittern @wrcmn. Despite its long neck, this bird is actually one of the smallest members of the heron family. They are wetland-based carnivores, feeding on small fish, frogs, salamanders, slugs, crayfish, and a variety of insects. Least bitterns will usually stand at the base of aquatic plants near the surface of the water and patiently wait for their prey to appear. Once they're in sight, the bird easily collects them from the water using its long, thin bill, and lightning-fast stabbing. Master of camouflage 🪶 Most of the year we don’t see Bitterns (Rørdrum) - the live very hidden in the reeds. But when winter is hard, they are forced out in the open to find cracks in the ice. Places to catch fish to survive on👌 This was the first time I was able to film this absolutely amazing and strange creature - so exciting 🪶

Follow (us) @ExplainingNature to learn something NEW about nature every day 🧠🦌 Bitterns are masters of patience when it comes to catching fish. These secretive herons spend much of their time hidden among reeds, perfectly camouflaged with their streaked brown feathers. When hunting, they stand completely still, blending into the vegetation until an unsuspecting fish or frog passes by. Once the prey comes close enough, the bittern strikes with lightning speed. Its long, dagger-like bill is perfectly adapted for spearing or grabbing slippery fish. The motion is so quick and precise that the prey often has no chance of escape. After the catch, the bittern will tilt its head back and swallow the fish whole. This sit-and-wait hunting style is energy efficient and effective, especially in shallow wetlands where movement could scare prey away. It’s a technique that has made the bittern one of nature’s stealthiest and most elusive hunters.
