We have fifteen species of Utricularia native to Florida. These highly specialized plants are infamous for feeding on small aquatic invertebrates they catch in their bladder-like traps. The unsuspecting prey brush against tiny hairs that trigger a trapdoor on the pressurized traps. As the trap suddenly opens, the organism and water are sucked into the bladder. With the bladder full and the door closed, the plant releases enzymes to digest the organism.
The process takes less than a second and is one of the most sophisticated and fast processes in the plant kingdom.
But they donโt just eat animals - they also trap and digest algae! Thatโs why many of the traps in this video are black. This seems to be opportunistic feeding, as the algae is inadvertently also sucked in when the traps are triggered. So I guess these are omnivorous plants!

JMAnother 6 month Utricularia quelchii one-pic-a-day timelapse. This one also did the same thing where it went on a slight winterstop and slowly spread throughout its pot.
Not quite sure what's happening with the Sphagnum. There is quite a drastic colour change, but the same stuff outside ...also did the same so it might be a seasonal cycle. Or it hated a certain fertiliser. Never had Sphagnum do well on those.
Either way there's tons of little green Utricularia leaves popping up again so...I'll keep the timelapse going ;).

A year and a half ago, my friend @bog_plants gave me a small 5-leaf division of this rare Utricularia. It's now filled this entire 8 x 4 acrylic bowl, and is growing out of the container. Its also produced two spikes of long-lasting hot pink flowers. The 2nd spike just finished blooming. ๐
It's growing in live green sphagnum moss on top of @fluvalaquatics Stratum.
